Hello all, it's been a while since I have posted an actual blog. With a name like Masked Blogster, you would think it's all I do. Well it's time to incorporate blogging back into my repertoire.
Today I am looking at subscription services for entertainment purposes. I got to thinking about subscription services the more and more I read about the amount of backlash World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) received for one of their events that is available on the WWE Network. Many were not happy about the outcome of the Royal Rumble (I was one of them) and threatened to cancel their subscription to WWE Network. Outside of a few bright spots, I haven't been real happy with the product that WWE has put out for a while but I love the Royal Rumble so I thought this may pull me back in. It didn't. Oh yeah, and I've heard the metaphor from a couple places, "If you didn't like the end of a book, would you turn in your library card?" Well the answer to that is No. I may think twice about reading from that author however.
That all being said, it was still okay for me to pay $9.99 for it. If I wanted to re-live some of the good old days of wrestling, WWE Network has a lot of edited content for that as well. And NXT is a great show for those of you who didn't watch Ring Of Honor (ROH) about five years ago. Kidding. Please don't get your tights in a bunch. I know it's a good show, I just don't want to pay for it.
Okay, the bitter wrestling mark in me is done. I'm sure I'll hop back on board once the content has changed. The issue I have, is there are so many other ways to be entertained via subscription services.
Netflix:
$7.99-$8.99 per month.
Awesome value for all kinds of movies and television shows. I cancelled cable/satellite television because I found myself checking Netflix first. Sure they have a lot of content you may have already watched but they also have their original content. House of Cards, Orange Is the New Black, and very soon Marvel's Daredevil and AKA Jessica Jones.
C'mon, under ten bucks per month and you can watch all the Doctor Who and 30 Rock you want!
Hulu Plus:
$7.99 per month.
So the big detraction I hear from everyone is, "There's still commercials on Hulu Plus." Yes there are. The great thing is, no need for DVR or OnDemand along with that cable or satellite bill. Shows like Arrow & Parks and Recreation can be watched the very next day! Hulu Plus has original content as well.
Marvel Unlimited:
$9.99 per month.
This is absolutely incredible. Over 13,000 Marvel Comics available on you smart phone or tablet. The problem you may have is trying to figure out where to start. Books can be arranged by title, creator or even by comic event. You could read the Age of Apocolypse followed by Avengers vs. X-Men. Brand new comics are not available, which is understandable. The most recent books are from 6 months back. I wish DC, Dark Horse, Image and other comic book companies would do something similar.
Amazon Prime:
$99 per year.
I have this but have not used it for television or movie watching. This was originally paid as we, in the Blogster home, order many things from Amazon.com and this expedites delivery along with a few other benefits. I'll get back to you on this one, as the previous three services take up my entertainment time. Well, other than...
