The Fundamentals of Caring: Film Review

Review:
I went into this thinking “oh man another movie where we
have to watch the main character slowly fad away after making a new friend.”
Thankfully that was not the case with The Fundamentals of Caring. This feel
good movie takes you on a road trip with Ben (Paul Rudd) and Trevor (Craig Roberts) as they visit pointless touristy locations and meet new people along
the way. Trevor, a teenager diagnosed with a form of Muscular Dystrophy lives a
very simple life, he does and eats the same thing everyday while he does what he can to push away which ever caregiver his mother hires to help take care of him. After meeting Ben, his latest caregiver, he leaves his home for the first time to go on a road trip to give Trevor a chance to see the world while he still can.
While things seem pretty predictable for how the story
will flow, it did not take away from the film at all. The chemistry between Ben
and Trevor could have seemed inappropriate to some, but was rather refreshing
and damn funny to watch. When it all comes down to it, Ben is giving Trevor the
opportunity to do more with his life than sit in his living room. Along the
way, they meet Dot, played by Selena Gomez, a young girl hitchhiking her way to
Denver. Insert cute boy crush here and what better for a crush then a friend
that is going to break your balls every chance he gets. Through out the film
Trevor constantly messes with Ben and as the friendship grows we slowly get to
see Ben get revenge and oh man is it sweet at times.
For all you “Netflix and chill” peeps, this movie is great,
even if you miss a little here and there, the film still flows and is easy to
follow. The chemistry between all of the characters is what really makes the
movie work. Some of the conversations that Rob Burnett wrote for these
characters where just fantastic. My favorite being when Trevor explains that he
is an asshole for not being an asshole and for taking her on a date. It sounds
like it shouldn’t make sense but it really does. Mix that with a bunch of back and forth
between two guys where the medical “stuff” quickly because the butt of the
jokes rather than a depressing black stain on the movie honestly leads to a
pretty good time.
