Black Canary - Issue 6 - Comic Book Review (DC)

Black Canary - #6 - DC
Written By: Brenden Fletcher
Art By: Annie Wu & Lee Loughridge

The battle of the bands has begun and Dinah has decided that her and the girls need to leave because the situation is becoming all too dangerous. The girls are in the dressing room getting ready to depart when Ditto has left a peculiar message for the girls, which raises even more questions about her and her background. Dinah decides that it’s now or never and they change their minds about leaving and head towards the stage to battle Bo and her band in head to head musical combat. Bo’s band is not just a band of musicians but something far more dangerous. Trouble ensues and Dinah and the girls are taken away to Gotham to meet with the head of the record label. The head of the label is strange but not a stranger to Dinah and the character hiding behind the door might be incredibly shocking for Dinah to see.

I enjoyed the colors used in this issue to help tell the story. The colors weren’t just there to show the clothes and scenery, it helped detail the action sequences. The visual story that was painted using the reds and blues was spectacular. The cross between when the situation escalated and the color orange used to tell the reader it is a calm moment was a delight. Visually, this was stunning issue.

The story continues to build and tension continues to mount for Dinah, Ditto and the girls. After 6 issues this is officially a slow burn story that enjoys taking its time detailing the characters, the plot, the mystery and struggles. There’s great attention paid to who the main characters are and the supporting cast is consistent and non-invasive. They provide subtle adjustments to the story that feel natural and never call unnecessary attention to themselves over the plot of the issue. Overall, this is building into a fabulous series and it continues to entertain.

Black Canary - Issue 5 - Comic Book Review (DC)

Black Canary - #5 - DC
Written By: Brenden Fletcher
Art By: Guerra, Loughridge, Jarrell

The girls finished up a gig and are on the road heading to the next town for an autograph session at a local record store. The drive proves too much and they have to camp in the woods first to rest up before the final drive into town. While asleep in their tents the mysterious ninja in white attacks Dinah and steals a vial of her blood. While at the record store a group of bands attack the record store and challenge Dinah and the girls to a battle of the bands. While backstage getting ready for their time on stage it’s revealed that Bo is on stage with her new band. Curiously, Bo has developed some new moves and her voice is now something to reckon with.

This story was well paced for having multiple locations and times for a single issue. The brief exchange between Dinah and the ninja in white was entertaining as they fought through the forest. Dinah realizing that this ninja moves in a familiar way added new tension to the story. The struggles are building and it’s slowly becoming clear that factors are at play that will challenge Dinah greatly in the future.

The reveal of Bo and her band at the end was a fun addition to this issue. We know that Bo has been altered because of the final pages of the previous issue but seeing her in action was a treat. Dinah is slowly becoming outnumbered and it won’t be long until she might need some help. Hopefully the girls in the band have been keeping up with their combat and gun skills. Overall, another enjoyable issue.

Black Canary - Issue 4 - Comic Book Review (DC)

Black Canary - #4 - DC
Written By: Brenden Fletcher
Art By: Pia Guerra & Lee Loughridge

This issue starts off with Ditto and Bo driving to a near by hotel to make some phone calls on payphones that are off the grid. Bo provides background information on her and Dinah’s past experiences in the music industry and how they met. Dinah discovers that Bo took Ditto and is in pursuit of both girls. After a phone call we see that Bo has other plans for Ditto and for herself as Amanda Waller makes a guest appearance only to be stopped by a mysterious ninja in white. Ditto escapes and reconnects with Dinah; however, the deal Bo made with Waller has come to fruition and things are more dangerous now than before.

This issue was exposition city. We learn so much about the character of Bo Maeve and why she’s hell bent on being more than Dinah. We are treated to her experiences as an entertainer and lead singer and we see the depths of her passion for becoming greater and defeating Dinah. This was great for building on the tension between Dinah and Bo. It helped shape the reasons why, which also is vital for caring about the struggle between these characters.

I was pleasantly surprised by the introduction of Amanda Waller and also the mysterious ninja who wears white. The issue provided lots of data but the end is where the issue really picks back up and excites. The big reveal regarding Bo’s deal with Waller has some great potential for the rest of this series. Overall, lots of information but finishes strong.

Black Canary - Issue 3 - Comic Book Review (DC)

Black Canary - #3 - DC
Written By: Brenden Fletcher
Art By: Annie Wu & Lee Loughridge

Dinah and the girls on the tour bus are heading to the next town for a concert but Dinah is on top of the bus fighting off an attack. After some time it’s revealed that the attacker from the music store, Dinah’s husband, is up to more than he appears. The band hits the stage and performs to the crowd but theres trouble brewing as the mysterious Ditto has vanished and none of the girls in the band know how.

The art work in this issue was spectacular. The way Dinah’s stage presence was matched with her fighting style was so much fun to read. One panel she’s stage diving into the crowd and the next panel you see she’s actually jumping onto an attacker riding a motorcycle. This was a fun issue that starts off with great action and then builds the story for there.

The big reveals regarding Dinah’s husband, Ditto and how Dinah got her powers were fascinating discoveries. This issue really did well on building out the complexities of the characters and the potential threat looming in the air. Plus the reveal on where Ditto went at the end of the issue adds tension to an already tense story. Overall, this continues to be an entertaining thrill ride.

Black Canary - Issue 2 - Comic Book Review (DC)

Black Canary - #2 - DC
Written By: Brenden Fletcher
Art By: Annie Wu & Lee Loughridge

Dinah and the girls of the band are in the desert learning hand to hand combat and how to shoot guns. A sudden gut instinct from Dinah and running into an old band member inspire the girls to head into town and do some shopping. While at the music store they’re attacked and the surprising reveal of the attackers identity tells Dinah the band is more danger than she thought.

The fact this issue began with the girls learning how to defend themselves tells me more action is in store down the road. This issue wasn’t as action packed as I thought but it certainly is building to action, and doing so nicely. I’m enjoying the development of each character too. It’s fun reading how each personality is shaping this series into a fully developed tale of spy thriller meets indie rock band.

I’m looking forward to future issues and seeing how Dinah will continue to mold and shape the band into a small rock and roll army to protect the mysterious girl, Ditto. Plus the exciting methods used to attack Dinah at the music store was fun to read. I’m looking forward to reading more about this new threats. Overall, still an entertaining read.
