Comic Book Review: Deathstroke Annual #2 - DC Comics (2016)

"The Balkan"

Written by Phil Hester
Art by Mirko Colak & Roberto Viacava
Colors by Michael Spicer

Deathstroke has been hired to do what he does better than anyone else: assassinate.  In a land where everything is based on greed and power, it can be tough for Deathstroke to take out his target(s).

Deathstroke Annual #2 starts one way and changes directions but it all happens so seamlessly.  Iam surprised all of this happened in the confines of one comic book.  This is a continuation from Deathstroke #20, but I can tell you that I haven't been following the series and I had no trouble figuring out what was going on.  I thoroughly enjoyed the pace of this comic book and the twists and turns were absolutely incredible.  Phil Hester concocted an amazing story that kept me guessing and left me surprised.

I was excited when I heard Phil Hester was writing this issue as he is one of my favorite people in the comic book business.  I've long been a fan of his artwork(I even bought an original piece from him) and his work as a writer is phenomenal.  I was even fortunate enough to be able to interview Hester on our podcast and you can listen to it here.

The art in Deathstroke Annual #2 is wonderful as well.  Multiple artists can sometime be distracting but in the case of this comic book it totally works.  Colak and Viacava did astounding work and the colors from Michael Spicer gave the book a remarkable look.  The action looked great and panel after panel, the story flowed well.

This is a great book and it is available now.  Again, this is a book you can pick up and enjoy.  There is backstory but it is explained within the story so you won't be lost trying to read it.

Legends of Tomorrow Review: Season 1 Episode 6 "Star City 2046"

Legends of Tomorrow Season 1 Episode 6
“Star City 2046”

Synopsis:
A malfunction sends the Waverider to 20146 Star City where theta faces a future in which they fail to stop Savage and return home.

Review:
With the team stranded in a 2046 Star City, they will need to work to repair the Waverider. In order to get it up and running, they need to find a prototype which was developed by Palmer Tech AKA Smoak Technology. With Rip and Sara out looking or the tech needed they come across the Green Arrow, but not the same one Sara used to know. Connor Hawk is now wearing the hood.

Connor is able to assist, and take them to the old hide out of Team Arrow. This is where they find a one armed Oliver, who was believed to be dead the entire time. After Connor was taken by Deathstroke, Sara convinces Olive to suite back up to save Diggle’s Son.

Final Thoughts:
Greg Berlanti just knows how to give the fans exactly what they want. Obviously there were some twist but in some ways its understandable changes. Instead of Connor being Olivers son, he is the son of Diggle. In many ways this makes sense due to the fact that they don’t want to give away anything from Arrow.

It was awesome to see Old Man Oliver, even if its a “Fake” future. I have to say, this episode didn’t disappoint at all. It delivered in every way. The geek side of me always gets excited when each of these shows tie in the music from each other show. It give it that added excitement to the scene, almost like its a nod to the fans to acknowledge the crossover.

Once again I must say with each passing week I find it harder to root for Rip Hunter. His character is becoming more and more a distraction from the show but is always saved by professor Stein and Snart.

I give this episode Two Thumbs Up, let us know what your thoughts of the episode were and leave a comment below.

Comic Book Review: Deathstroke (The New 52!) - Issue 2 - DC Comi

“Deathstroke”  Issue #2
Written By: Tony Daniel
Art By: Sanou Florea and Tomeu Morey

Synopsis
The Ukraine, within Deathstroke’s Fortress, we see a younger looking Deathstroke trying to locate the man, I-Ching, who is responsible for his sudden youthful physical appearance. As he runs downstairs he sees Odysseus and attacks him only to discover it’s a projected hologram, courtesy of a new mysterious figure known only as Red Fury. A discussion ensues where Red Fury informs the new youthful looking Deathstroke of current situations and then an army of men attack the fortress only to meet Deathstroke, able and ready to annihilate them in combat. Shortly after we see that Lady Shiva and Bronze Tiger are somehow involved and Deathstroke has left his European fortress and begun searching for answers when he makes a startling discovery.

Opinion
The second installment in this new series and I’m hooked. I’m enjoying the art so much and the dialogue feels appropriate for a mercenary tale. The characters are starting to come together in a way that ties the story together while adding new twists and turns that kept me interested and excited to keep reading. The way to battles are drawn and colored are doing well to visually tell how brutal this story is and will continue to be. As each character expresses more and more detail into this bizarre adventure I found myself skipping ahead to read more, faster, and then having to come back and enjoy the visual aspects of the story on occasion.

2 Thumbs up and not because I’m afraid any other rating would anger an already angry Deathstroke.
