GLOW - Review

In 1985, a casting call went out in Los Angeles looking for out of work actresses and models.  Roughly a dozen women from that casting call were selected to begin work on a new wrestling show that featured only female performers.  As with anything, the show had its critics.  It was campy, at times cheesy, and at least initially, the quality of wrestling left a lot to be desired as most of the performers had little to no experience in the ring.  Despite all of that, from 1986-1990, Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling (GLOW) became a nationally televised cultural phenomenon.

--MILD SPOILERS AHEAD--

Fast forward to 2017… Netflix has put out a new comedy loosely based on the now defunct wrestling promotion.  The aptly named GLOW hit the popular streaming service on Friday and is quickly gaining some serious word-of-mouth credibility.  The ten, 30-minute episode series chronicles the first few months of GLOW’s existence starting with the casting call and taking the audience all the way through the end of the wrestling show’s very first televised event.

Here’s the thing though, this is not a show about wrestling.  This is the story of the personal lives of the people involved while using the wrestling show as a backdrop.  In the opening minutes of the show (directly after the totally tubular opening credit sequence set to Patty Smyth’s “Warrior”) we are introduced to Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie), an out of work actress that has dreams bigger than the opportunities presented to her.  After yet another failed line reading, Ruth receives a tip about an “unorthodox” casting call that had recently came out.  As she prepares to begin her journey to women’s wrestling we also meet Debbie Eagan (Betty Gulpin), Ruth’s best friend and former soap opera star who retired to start a family.  Once Ruth has signed on with GLOW we also meet Bash (Chris Lowell), the remarkably Rob Lowe-esque financier and Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron), the director of the wrestling show.  Sam is a cocaine inhaling, womanizing, slime ball, yet Maron manages to make Sam almost relatable and loveable (the running joke about Back to the Future beating his new script about time travel, “Mothers and Lovers”, to the theaters is particularly amusing). Despite all of the strong performances, Maron is hands down the true standout of GLOW.  Throughout the 10 episodes, we follow these characters as well as the rest of the ladies who have joined up with the promotion on their personal journeys, covering the spectrum of emotions and personal experiences from friendship, to distrust, to camaraderie, to betrayal, and ultimately to acceptance.

As with anything that involves wrestling, there are a few easter eggs hidden in GLOW for fans to find.  Obviously, one could point to the multiple cameos by wrestlers throughout the series (for fun, be sure to point out any cameos you spotted in the comments below!) but my favorite tidbit is the name of the gym.  The ladies are training in a run-down dump of a gym named “Chavo’s”.  Chavo Guerrero Jr was the trainer hired by Netflix to help the actors with their wrestling.  Any fan of wrestling is extremely familiar with the Guerrero name, true wrestling royalty.  The really fun part about all of this?  The man hired as the trainer in the real-life GLOW was Chavo Jr’s uncle, Mando Guerrero.  A huge “well done” to Netflix for giving a nod to one of the truly great wrestling families.

With a total runtime of roughly 5 hours, GLOW is worth your time. First and foremost, it has all of the necessary ingredients for an 80’s show: hairspray, french-cut leotards (how did I forget about those!?), a designer drug dispensing robot (yes, really) and of course a totally bad-ass soundtrack.  Add to that the wrestling, comedy, acting, and well written characters, GLOW will make any viewer feel personally invested in these people’s lives.  Spend some time with the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling and if you like it, spread the word so we can all see where our new friends from GLOW go from here!

Lucha Underground - Television Review 4/13/2016

"Three's a Crowd"

Lucha Underground is one of the greatest things to happen for fans of professional wrestling.  I'm amazed every time I watch the show and keep saying to myself, "I should do a review on this show."

Well here it is.  Season two, episode nine of this weekly episodic television program and as always, it was awesome.  It's great to hear a crowd chant, "This is awesome," and have the action be exactly that.  I'll give a run down of the matches that took place along with the backstage events and tell some of the things I liked the most.

The show opens with Dario Cueto putting together a team for the Trios Tournament.  Cueto loves unlikely teams so he puts together the team of Johnny Mundo, Taya and the man(sorry, machine) they've been embroiled in battle against, Cage.  None of the combatants like it but it's a battle for potential Lucha Underground gold so they agree.

We go to the announce team of Matt Striker and Vampiro who let us know what to expect.  I really like Matt Striker as an announcer.  His play by play has gotten much better as he has progressed in his career.  He seems to know when to talk and when to let the action speak for itself.  He also seems to have a passion that comes out when he is calling the matches.  Vampiro has been around a while and I like how Striker differs to Vampiro for expert advice.  Vampiro totally works for this team as the guy says whatever he wants.  We are also introduced to the band playing tonight, "El Conjunto Nueva Ola."  Yeah, Lucha Underground has live bands as well.  I need to get to one of these shows.

The first match of the night was Argenis vs. Killshot.  There seemed to be some feeling out early on but when these two got going it was pretty incredible.  Killshot had an amazing flip over the top rope onto Argenis on the floor.  Later in the match Argenis was able to give an arm drag off the top rope.  Killshot got the win however with a move that I'm not even sure what you would call but it was nasty!

Backstage, Dragon Azteca is talking to a woman(sorry, haven't been watching long), and they are discussing who killed their master.  She says it was the monster, who as the audience we assume is the Lucha Underground Champion Matanza Cueto.  The woman seems to be secretly working behind the scenes and Dragon Azteca leaves.

Dario Cueto, the man in charge of Lucha Underground, is in his office with newcomer Daga.  Cueto explains to Daga that he will be wrestling Texano for one of the seven ancient Aztec medallions.  The medallions can be used as an opportunity to wrestle for the Gift of the Gods championship.

Daga vs Texano was our second match of the night and it too was fantastic.  Lots of hard hitting and high flying action.  Texano gets the win and comes away with one of the ancient Aztec medallions.

The luchador of the week is Fenix.  There is a cool video montage showing the former Lucha Underground Champion.

We are treated to a scene of another former Lucha Underground Champion, Mil Muertos who is kneeling at an alter,  Catrina is behind him and raises the former Trios Champions from beneath the Earth.  She says they seek his forgiveness and will not let him down.  We also find out that Mil Muertos will soon get a shot at the Lucha Underground Championship and it sounds like it will be next week!

The final match of the night just about left me breathless.  A first round match in the Trios Tournament.  Rey Mysterio Jr, Prince Puma and Dragon Azteca vs. Johnny Mundo, Taya and Cage.  This is such a remarkable list of names all in one match.  Rey Mysterio Jr. is the most famous luchador worldwide.  Prince Puma is the first ever Lucha Underground Champion and looks a lot like a certain King.  Dragon Azteca so far looks great in the ring.  Johnny Mundo is well known in the wrestling world, although many might know him by another last name(Nitro, Morrison).  Taya is a woman who can mix it up with the guys.  Cage is absolutely a machine and television doesn't do him justice as far as recognizing how massive he is.  I've been in the same room as him and he's huge!

The action in this match went everywhere!  Not only was the match great, but Matt Striker calling the action was superb.  How he was able to keep up with everything is beyond me.  Even Vampiro had to stop and let it be known how great Striker was.  Calling the action, interjecting humor(saying Taya looked like the lead singer of Jem and the Holograms was outrageous, truly truly outrageous).

There were so many highlights within this match it is difficult to narrow it down.  The high flying outside of the ring was excellent.  Cage, with Prince Puma laying across his shoulders and then catching Dragon Azteca who attempted a plancha off the ropes and then following up with a fallaway slam.  The finish was great with Johnny Mundo getting hit with Rey Mysterio Jr's 619, a sick DDT from Dragon Azteca and then the 630 splash off the top rope from Prince Puma.  Your winners, Rey Mysterio Jr, Dragon Azteca and Prince Puma.

This was a fantastic episode from top to bottom.  I love the fact that Lucha Underground is one hour and all of it is good.  I'm looking forward to next week.

Lucha Underground is on Wednesday nights on the El Rey Network.  Check local listings.

Comic Book Review: Ringside #1 - Image Comics (2015)

Written by Joe Keatinge
Art by Nick Barber

I have been looking forward to checking out "Ringside" as I am a fan of professional wrestling as well as comic books.  I didn't read any previews prior to picking up the first issue so I had no idea what I was going to be getting into.  I was happy to find out it is looking at professional wrestling more-so from the backstage perspective.

The story centers around Dan Knossos.  Dan is a retired professional wrestler who was known as "The Minotaur."  Dan had been in Japan training younger up and coming professional wrestlers.  He is now back in the United States as he has business that needs to be handled.

The first issue of "Ringside" is a nice introduction to Dan.  He's a man who is well known inside the business of professional wrestling.  He has friends that he is able to meet and get rides around town as needed.  We also get to see some backstory and why he doesn't always like to remember his "Minotaur" days.  Dan also has a place to stay with a young woman friend who is confined to a wheelchair.

Dan is back because he heard from someone named Teddy who is apparently very close to him.  Dan goes on the search for Teddy but is met with someone else and this someone does not want Dan around.  Dan is met with a pipe wrench and a beating from a group of men and is told to leave town and forget about Teddy.

Dan goes back to the friend with whom he is staying and it looks like he has no plans of leaving town.

This was a very good first issue and I'm looking forward to seeing where the story goes from here.  I like that it's not just about professional wrestling comic but it still includes plenty of violence.  If you're looking for a comic book series to get started on, this would be a nice one to start on as the series is just getting started.  Even if you are not a professional wrestling fan, this is a cool and brutal book.

Original Comic Book: Blasto the Clown - Issue 1 - Blasto Begins

Blasto the Clown is a book from the mind of Kevin Moyers by way of very odd circumstances.

Blasto was a character conceived for another friend, Jeff, to play in real life.  He was to be a clown for a fart fetish video.  Page two was basically shout out to the origin.  The video never happened but the creative, or twisted rather, minds of Abnormal Entertainment had other plans for a face painted hero.

One night, during a recording of Maskerpiece Theatre, Kevin Moyers said to me he had the perfect project to work on with me.  He said it was about a farting clown named Blasto and that was all I needed to hear.  We met up one day and after a few(okay, many) beers and after three quarters of the day wasted, we came up with the first issue of Blasto the Clown.  Kevin already had the origin in mind, we just needed a good way to showcase his newly found "power."

This was a great project for me to immerse myself in.  I have always enjoyed drawing comic books and this gave me an outlet.  I actually left my full time job to work on this, and other projects.  We were able to unveil Blasto at Phoenix ComiCon as a short film, you know, because we added voices and sound effects to it.  The pages were done in pencil and ink with the colors added digitally.  The cover, an homage to Marvel's Amazing Fantasy #15, was all done digitally.

Okay, I'm done yapping, here's Blasto Begins!
