Casting Batgirl

It was recently announced that DC's Batgirl will be an upcoming movie from Joss Whedon.  I was immediately excited by this news.  I feel like Joss Whedon is an amazing fit for a strong female superhero.  I have enjoyed his works in film, tv and comic books.  Whedon was the writer for Astonishing X-Men for Marvel and what he was able to do with Kitty Pryde's character makes me more than confident he will make an incredible film.

Batgirl's alter ego is Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Gotham police chief Jim Gordon.  She is trained by Batman and has a little something going on with Dick Grayson aka Robin/Nightwing.  This could be a really interesting story so I'm glad Joss Whedon is the guy in charge.

Since Joss is going to busy with all the writing and directing and such, we at Maskerpiece Theatre though we would lend a helping hand in the casting department.  I posed the question to the Maskerpiece Theatre contributors: Who should be cast as Batgirl?  I have the responses below.  They are in no particular order as we each picked somebody.

Addison Timlin

Karen Gillen

Summer Glau

Rhonda Rousey

Emily Browning

Shailene Woodley

Liv Hewson

I used the cover photo of each actress' IMDB profile.  What are your thoughts on our choices?  Who do you think would be the best actress to play Barbara Gordon/Batgirl?

Comic Book Review: Spider-Man: BLUE #s 1-5 - Marvel Comics

Written by Jeph Loeb
Art by Tim Sale

Spider-Man: BLUE is a retelling of a younger Peter Parker and his first love, Gwen Stacy.  It's also a the tale of how Peter first met Mary Jane Watson.  The life of Peter Parker has always been pretty complicated with him juggling life as a photographer and being a student and of course; being Spider-Man.  If that doesn't complicate things enough, now throw in a pretty girl.  Scratch that, make that two pretty girls.  Did I mention Spider-Man always seems to have a villain show up at the most inopportune times?

This review has some spoilers in it.  It's not exactly a new series though, so read it anyway.  Maybe it will entice you to pick up the trade paperback.

I absolutely love the way this story is told.  This is actually a
recollection of Peter's life, as told by himself on a tape recorder.  Peter is telling the story to Gwen Stacy, his first love, who would ultimately meet her demise.  I thought that this book was going to be the story of Gwen Stacy meeting her death but it was actually about Peter thinking back to his younger years and hanging out with his friends Harry Osborne, Flash Thompson and the afformentioned Gwen Stacy.  He also recollects his many foes he had to face in a short period of time.  Peter also remembers that time he hit the jackpot; meeting Mary Jane Watson.

For those of you who may not know about the Betty and Veronica type of struggle that Peter Parker had, two beautiful women seemed to have a thing for him.  This collection of comic books tells the story amazingly well.  Jeph Loeb does a wonderful job in mixing dialogue between characters along with Peter speaking to Gwen via tape recorder. Toward the end of the series, Mary Jane walks in on Peter talking to the tape recorder.  What she says is enough to bring a tear to the eye.  Hats off to the Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale for creating such a memorable page.

Tim Sale was such an extraordinary choice to be the artist for Spider-Man: BLUE.  He has a style that captures what Spider-Man is all about.  He also is tasked with drawing so many of ol' Web-Head's foes as Kraven the Hunter has gathered some of Spidey's biggest baddies to bring down the wall-crawler.  This series includes Green Goblin, Rhino, The Lizard, Vulture, Scorpion and more!  This must have been a fun project.  Spider-Man has some of the greatest villains in all of comics.  He is one of the greatest heroes of all time and is the face of Marvel in my opinion.

I received the trade paperback in the Comic Bento subscription box and you can read my full review for the box here.

Comic Book Review: Spawn #27 - Image Comics (1995)

"Cursed"
Story by Todd McFarlane
Art by Todd McFarlane and Greg Capullo
Color by Steve Oliff and Olyoptics

Spawn is doing some soul searching in the alleys of New York City.  While Spawn is contemplating life, a new person is joining the fray of those that a serving a higher power.  This is all going on as Terry and Wanda are trying to figure out who has been making Terry's life difficult.

I received this comic book in the Comic of the Month Club subscription box.  It's a random number but all in all an enjoyable comic book.  Todd McFarlane's Spawn is one of the few Image properties that has stood the test of time.  Image Comics is much different than what was introduced more than twenty years ago.  Spawn continues to thrive however.  Comics, toys, the HBO series, the movie and another movie coming soon has kept this unlikely hero relevant in the superhero world.

Issue number 27 was a lot of fun to read.  I had only read much earlier issues of Spawn previously but I watched the entire HBO series a couple of times so I was able to fill in some of the gaps(provided it follows somewhat closely).  Everything seemed to progress well and left me wanting to read the next issue.

The art looks beyond incredible in this book.  Todd McFarlane is one the all time greats and he is accompanied by an artist that has become a superstar in his own right; Greg Capullo.  Every panel is a joy to look at and flows with the story amazingly well.

What are your thoughts on Spawn?  Which Image Comics originals are your favorites?

Comic Book Review: Justice League America #91 - DC Comics (1994)

"Heroes Passage"
Written by Dan Vado
Pencils by Marc Campos
Inks by Ken Branch
Colors by Gene D'Angelo

The Justice League America members mourn the loss of Ice(Tora) and prepare and attend her funeral.  The League's home base of operations was destroyed and now the UN does not want the heroes to assist with the cleanup or to be anywhere near the site.

I received this comic book in the Comic of the Month subscription box so that's why I have a bit of a random book to review here.   I did not read the books that lead up to this event, nor have I read the books that immediately follow.  This is one of the things I think a lot of folks miss out on in comic books.  The big companies constantly reboot or start over from #1(without actually starting over).  I really enjoyed reading the book and piecing the story together without any backstory.  It brought me back to when I first started reading comic books.

With regard to action, this book is lacking.  By no means is that a bad thing however as the dialogue between the Justice League America members was wonderful.  Everyone is grieving the loss of Tora and there is a lot of frustration and blame being passed around.  There is also the scene where the heroes bring Tora back to her homeland and bringing the body to her mother, Queen Olaf.  The Queen was not happy with the League but did allow the members to attend the funeral.

The art looks fine and it must have been a fun task for Marc Campos as he was tasked with drawing some truly great heroes like Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, Blue Beetle and Booster Gold(who was in a weird suit of armor that is keeping him alive - I may need to find the previous books to see what happened).  Everything was captured pretty well and it flowed with the story.

What are your thought on reading random comic books?  Do you have any comic book suggestions for Maskerpiece Theatre to review?  Please comment below or find us on social media and let us know.

Binge Watcher Review 13 Reasons Why

Binge Watcher Review for 13 Reasons Why

Creator: Brian Yorkey

Starring: Katherine Langford, Dylan Minnette, Christian Navarro, Justine Prentice, Devin Druid, Miles Heizer, Brandon Flynn, Ross Butler, Derek Luke, Kate Walsh, Alisha Boe, Ajiona Alexus, Brandon Larracuente

Synopsis: Follows teenager Clay Jensen, in his quest to uncover the story behind his classmate and crush, Hannah, and her decision to end her life.

***There will be spoilers!***

Review: I’m going to state this right now, I have not read the book so I will not be comparing or complaining about things that are or are not different between the two. Now, to talk about the show, 13 Reasons Why is a whirlwind of emotions and teenage angst. Over the course of 13 episodes we listen to Hannah’s tapes with Clay as he hears about the events that lead to Hannah committing suicide. Overall the pace of the show is and feels slow, but the pace fit the show well. I constantly found my self getting frustrated at Clay for not listening to the tapes faster, but at the same time it gave you enough time to experience ever event. The frustration didn't stop me though, I kept coming back for more. The longer it went the more I wanted to know what lead to the inevitable ending we all knew was coming.

The basis of the show is about Hannah, a high school student that committed suicide, but before she took her own life she recorded the 13 reasons that lead to her ending it all. Each side of 7 different tapes is dedicated to one person that did something to her that led her to committing suicide. Everyone that has a side must listen to all of the tapes in order and then pass them on to the next person. The series starts with Clay getting the shoebox full of tapes and continues with each episode focusing on one side of each tape. While the show is very much from Clay's perspective, the tapes give a creative way to have Hannah narrate each story from her perspective. Thats what this show is, the events of her life from her perspective. Yes, some episodes seem less "end of the world" than others, but it is high school and that is how teens tend to see things.

I’m going to go at this by character and who better to start with than Hannah. First and foremost, this poor girl… This series did an excellent job at showing how flawed we are as humans and how much worse high school tends to make everything.  Now I will admit, knowing the outcome that Hannah kills herself gives a different perspective to the show. While watching, it is easy to find yourself asking “Is that why she does it?” For the most of the episodes we experience these events from how Hannah feels they happen. They are her truth. Katherine Langford did an incredible job playing a young vulnerable teenage girl that goes through a lot of life changing situations in a short amount of time. Her chemistry with the other characters is what made the show so emotional. It all had a tendency to feel very real.

Next up, well I’m not even sure what to say for Clay Jensen. I want to sympathize with him, but at the same time, come on man listen to the damn tapes faster!!! There I said it, now that I got that off my chest, I can move on. I’m sure if I was put in this situation I would have my own doubts and hesitations too. Each tape that he listens too opens a new set of questions, not to mention the big question he has “Did I kill Hannah Baker?” Clay was adorable, each episode you want him to come out of his shell and get his moment with Hannah. We also have to wait with Clay, wait for his tape to come, wait to see what all actually happened to Hannah. As each episode passes though, there are moments where Clay gets revenge (or dishing out his own form of justice if you will) on different people for Hannah.  While some of his revenge plots may go a little far, it helps show that no character is perfect in this show not even Clay.

My two favorite characters in the series are Tony and Jeff. Probably the best term to use to describe Tony in this show is the enforcer. Tony is tasked with making sure everyone that is on the tapes listens.  Tony is like a wild card through out the show. While you can tell that he is committed to making sure everyone listens to the tapes, you can also tell that he really does care about Clay. He is always there watching. Tony is like the guild that keeps Clay on track and also tries to protect him from the other kids that want to make sure Clay keeps his mouth shut. I am very grateful how unique of a character he is. Then there is Jeff. Man I wasn’t ready for that outcome. Jeff was a fellow student that Clay would tutor and in return Jeff would help Clay with girls. Jeff wasn’t a jerk about it though, that was the cool part. He seemed like the only jock that wasn't a total dick. The guy just made you smile. He was the friend that would nudge you in the right direction. Kudos to the writers for how Jeff’s story broke down, because even though there were hints, I did not see that outcome coming. Needless to say, that broke my heart. Also if you want a good laugh, look up the #Jeffdeservedbetter posts.

I'm going to go through some other characters rather quickly. I'll start with Justin, at the start of the series, I couldn't stand this guy. There were moments where he would do something that would make me hate him less, but mostly the kid was just put in between a rock and a hard place. Tyler, you creepy stalker you, I really want to know how your story ends. There really is just to many unanswered questions, like what did you do with that gun? My theory is there is a reason you took down Alex's photo and then ended up in an ambulance with a gun shot wound at the end of that episode. I don't know just my thought. Most of the girls in the show just seemed like your normal high school students, confused and worried about the wrong things. One exception is Jessica, the subtle hints and changes to the character all make more and more sense as the season continues. Once we learn that Bryce got is hands on her, the down fall of that character all seems to come together. Alisha Boe did an amazing job!

All of the characters that had tapes had their moment to stand out in their episodes. Some of them you will like and some you will hate. If anyone likes Bryce, we can’t be friends so please just leave.  Don’t pass judgment on all of the characters right away though. As the tapes continue, we get a better perspective and a few of them and why they act the way they do. Life isn’t perfect and this show tends to show you the worst in people.

The things I liked about the show:

·      No one is perfect in this show, not even Hannah. It would have been so easy to make Hannah the innocent girl that had horrible things done to her. Kudos to the writers for giving the audience enough doubt about some things by proving that it didn’t all go down the way Hannah thought.  The show got it right, it was Hannah’s truth, but that doesn’t mean it was the whole truth.
·      No sugar coating anything. This whole series was in your face and brutally honest about what can and does happen to some teenagers.
·      The cause and affect (long term and short term) for people’s actions. Example being the list that was made where Hannah was picked as “best ass.” Which constantly comes back into play through out the season.
·      Parents aren’t perfect and they are just as lost and confused as everyone else. Being a teenager is lonely, but oddly enough parents are the last ones we want to talk to about it. The parent’s perspective was played very well in this show. Kate Walsh made my heart hurt at times.

The things I didn’t like about the show:

·      I find it highly unlikely that these tapes would have been passed on as they were supposed to. While Tony makes a good enforcer, I just find it very unlikely.
·      The biggest thing, how could 11 people listen to those tapes and not one of them called the police on Bryce? Honesty what the F*%&?
·      What the hell is going on with that school staff? I still don’t know how I’m supposed to feel about Mr. Porter. I mean is he a good guy or a bad guy? I don’t know

·      The lack of closure. Yes, a few character stories were wrapped up but the ending sorta felt like blah. It’s like so much time was given at the beginning and then at the end they rushed through everything to just wrap it up. I sorta just found myself thinking, oh its over.

CHIPs - Review

The transition from television to major motion picture can be tricky to make. We have an expectation from the characters because we have become familiar with them by watching their hijinks every week on tv. So, how does one take a television franchise about the California Highway Patrol and turn it into a major motion picture? Let’s find out in this review of “CHIPS.”

The story was adjusted from the original television show that ran from 1977-1983. This iteration has an undercover agent of the FBI and a motorcycle stunt man leading the charge. Both characters have their own unique issues they are trying to come to terms with in this film. Writer/Director Dax Shepard said in an interview on the Nerdist Podcast that he was trying to make a film akin to “Lethal Weapon.” While I can see where he was attempting to go, the overall delivery fell short of that movie. The characters felt partly developed and overstated. By that, I mean, they felt more like caricatures instead of believable people in their situation. The dialogue for both the leads indicated that some research had gone into developing these two leads. The manner in which they’d discuss addiction, for example, told me that an honest attempt was made on making a quality film. That all being said, the overall product did not deliver.

The one concern I have going into theaters to see a comedy is that the funniest parts of the film are in the trailers leading up to the release. I am happy to report that this film still had some laugh out loud moments not in the trailers. However, that alone is not enough to save this film. There’s also some dark moments in this story, again, indicating that this was meant to be better than it turned out to be. When fingers get blown off, my jaw dropped. That was a surprise and a well placed surprise at that. Additionally, Vincent D’Onofrio played the villain but more importantly he used his own voice. The last two characters he played he altered his voice. Thankfully, we get normal sounding Vincent. His performances are generally always entertaining so I don’t want to elaborate more on his performance in this film. I was simply commenting on the fact he used his normal voice and that was a pleasant break from what he has been doing.

CHIPS” Is in theaters now! Don’t see this movie in theaters. It’s not worth the ticket price or concessions that go along with the price of a ticket. I will say that if you find yourself relaxing on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon and it comes on or is rented at Redbox than give it a shot. It’s not a terrible film but it does fail where I believe it was supposed to deliver. All in all, keep your expectations low, pour yourself a drink, whatever that might be, kick your feet up and don’t be surprised if you nap periodically throughout the movie while lounging in the comforts of your own home.

Ghost In the Shell - Review

Computers and Humanity meet in this science fiction action flick. Robots are becoming more human and humans are enhancing themselves with robotics. So much so, that if you are a human without an enhancement people look at you curiously. So what happens when an experiment starts to go wrong and people start dying? Let’s take a look at “Ghost in the Shell” in this review…

There’s an entire group of people who love the source material this film originates from. I am not one of those people. I don’t dislike the source material either. I am, in fact, completely unaware of the source material. I knew nothing about this film going in except that the main character can jump off buildings while turning invisible and shooting guns. All I knew was because of the trailers. Perhaps that lack of backstory helped elevate my enjoyment of this film. I found the premise of the movie to be well constructed. The delivery of the action I thought was equally enjoyable. The movie from beginning to end looks incredible. That was the one main constant throughout the film. It looks spectacular. The graphics team that worked on this movie did a phenomenal job and the look of everything made this entire film uniquely special.

The overall tones that make up the visuals are dark. The story takes place in dangerous parts of town with nefarious characters who are always up to no good. However, in contrast to that, the city is vibrant and alive with neon as the future setting is bright and holographic. The main character “Major” played by Scarlett Johansson is in stark contrast to the world she inhabits. She is a bright white incandescent glow in an otherwise dreary looking city. The rest of the characters in this film are draped in blacks, browns and grays. She stands out in every sense. While the world around her is bleak and brooding her design is the complete opposite. She is (both as a character and an idea) meant to stand out in this movie and so she does.

The story is just as enjoyable as the look of the film. I found the covert operations team, and the manner in which they cooperated together to solve crimes, well designed. The writing develops them enough without each character back story overshadowing the main characters and the plot. We get enough to build out the world we’re inhabiting in this movie but not so much it’s distracting. I honestly do not understand all the negative press this film is getting. I found it to be quite entertaining and enjoyable.

Ghost In the Shell” is in theaters now! I definitely recommend you see this movie on the big screen if you like science fiction action flicks with plenty of special effects/computer generated images. It looks great in theaters and some of the fight scenes are more entertaining than I expected. I walked out of the theater glad I spent the time experiencing this new world and the characters in it. It looks great and the story is developed enough to be worthwhile. Check it out!

Power Rangers - Review

“Breakfast Club” meets “Pacific Rim” is not the story I was expecting when I walked into the theater. Movies always share ideas and concepts, sure. However, combining two different genre’s of film such as these to create a movie based off a television show from the 1990’s was surprising. Does it work? Is the combination of ideas believable? Let’s take a look at “Power Rangers” in this review….

The film does a good job explaining the world this story takes place in. We get plenty of information about the mythos, the individual characters and the threat that is imminent. However, I felt like i was watching two different films that eventually meet in the third act to become one. We have one movie that involves the troubled teenagers becoming the Power Rangers. We have the second story which is everything Elizabeth Banks is in. These two stories don’t feel the same, look the same and the characters almost appear to be directed to act differently. The teenagers are all, for the most part, believable in their characters. Banks, however, is creepy and campy. Her villainy felt displaced in this film. I feel she would've been better served as the bad guy in the old TV show. I’m not sure why she was allowed to act so over-the-top in comparison to her counterparts. It was distracting and it legitimately felt like I was watching two different movies at the same time.

The overall movie I enjoyed. I found it to be a fun action flick with some well placed humor. Plus, we get at least one great character in "Billy" played by RJ Cyler. He's the heart and soul of the film without question. There's even scripted dialogue stating that just in case you don't pick up on it yourself. This is a great appetizer for the summer blockbuster buffet that awaits us. The humor isn’t all in the trailers and neither is the action. There’s a Saturday morning cartoon moment that is strictly for the fans. When it occurs in the third act it feels out of place and it took me out of the film. I did smile though because I knew where it was coming from and that it was strictly fan service. The entire film told me that this was a movie meant for old fans and new fans. Basically, this has something for everyone if you enjoy action movies that deal with superheroes and giant robots that fight monsters.

Power Rangers” is in theaters now! I recommend people go out and see this on the big screen. It’s not a great film but it’s also not terrible. Again, it is a fun action flick that deals with giant robots fighting monsters that some enjoyable comedic moments.. Who doesn’t love that?? I wouldn’t recommend children under the age of 12 see this because, again, Elizabeth Banks plays a very creepy character that could definitely scare some kids. All in all, fun flick with some good action and humor. Check it out!
