Comic Book Review: Secret Empire / Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man - Free Comic Book Day Edition - Marvel Comics

The following two reviews come from the same comic book.  They are from the special "Free Comic Book Day" edition.

Secret Empire
Written by Nick Spencer
Art by Andrea Sorrentino

The heroes of the Marvel Universe are in a tumultuous battle with Hydra.  Things are not going well and it is about to get a whole lot worse.

Captain America has been Hydra the whole time despite 70 years of fighting them.  I'm sure the preludes made sense of it but it just doesn't interest me at all.  I read this comic book and Secret Invasion #0 but I think that is as far as I will get.  Let me know when Captain America is back to normal.  It's a comic book event and there is no way he stays a villain.

On the bright side, Andrea Sorrentino is a fantastic artist.  I really enjoyed the visuals in this comic book, even if the story itself does not really get me excited.

Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man
"...Time Flies"
Written by Chip Zdarsky
Pencils by Paolo Siqueira
Inks by Walden Wong, Cam Smith, Jay Leisten & Paolo Siqueira
Colors by Frank D'Armata

Peter Parker is attempting to have lunch with Mary Jane Watson, head of Stark Industries but as always, some super-villain just happens to be causing mischief/mayhem.  Peter must leave to become the Spectacular Spider-Man and take on The Vulture.  There may be an extra person in play however...

This is more like it.  Lots of fun dialogue, a superhero in action and trying to juggle his personal life at the same time.  He takes on an old foe and meeting someone else who seems to be taking Paste Pot Pete's gimmick.  There were not many pages as this was a tease for the upcoming Spectacular Spider-Man series in June.

The art looks really good in this comic book.  A Spider-Man would be a tough series to take on since there are so many tall buildings and perspectives for the artist to draw.  This team did a wonderful job of doing this.  The buildings were detailed without being a distraction on the panels.  There is so much to love about Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man.  It looks like I will be adding this to my pull list at my local comic shop.

What are your thoughts on Secret Empire?  Will you be picking up Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man?

Comic Book Review: Spider-Man: BLUE #s 1-5 - Marvel Comics

Written by Jeph Loeb
Art by Tim Sale

Spider-Man: BLUE is a retelling of a younger Peter Parker and his first love, Gwen Stacy.  It's also a the tale of how Peter first met Mary Jane Watson.  The life of Peter Parker has always been pretty complicated with him juggling life as a photographer and being a student and of course; being Spider-Man.  If that doesn't complicate things enough, now throw in a pretty girl.  Scratch that, make that two pretty girls.  Did I mention Spider-Man always seems to have a villain show up at the most inopportune times?

This review has some spoilers in it.  It's not exactly a new series though, so read it anyway.  Maybe it will entice you to pick up the trade paperback.

I absolutely love the way this story is told.  This is actually a
recollection of Peter's life, as told by himself on a tape recorder.  Peter is telling the story to Gwen Stacy, his first love, who would ultimately meet her demise.  I thought that this book was going to be the story of Gwen Stacy meeting her death but it was actually about Peter thinking back to his younger years and hanging out with his friends Harry Osborne, Flash Thompson and the afformentioned Gwen Stacy.  He also recollects his many foes he had to face in a short period of time.  Peter also remembers that time he hit the jackpot; meeting Mary Jane Watson.

For those of you who may not know about the Betty and Veronica type of struggle that Peter Parker had, two beautiful women seemed to have a thing for him.  This collection of comic books tells the story amazingly well.  Jeph Loeb does a wonderful job in mixing dialogue between characters along with Peter speaking to Gwen via tape recorder. Toward the end of the series, Mary Jane walks in on Peter talking to the tape recorder.  What she says is enough to bring a tear to the eye.  Hats off to the Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale for creating such a memorable page.

Tim Sale was such an extraordinary choice to be the artist for Spider-Man: BLUE.  He has a style that captures what Spider-Man is all about.  He also is tasked with drawing so many of ol' Web-Head's foes as Kraven the Hunter has gathered some of Spidey's biggest baddies to bring down the wall-crawler.  This series includes Green Goblin, Rhino, The Lizard, Vulture, Scorpion and more!  This must have been a fun project.  Spider-Man has some of the greatest villains in all of comics.  He is one of the greatest heroes of all time and is the face of Marvel in my opinion.

I received the trade paperback in the Comic Bento subscription box and you can read my full review for the box here.

Comic Book Review: Spider-Man #8 - Marvel Comics (2016)

Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Art by Nico Leon
Colors by Marte Gracia

Spider-Man is approached by Jessica Jones and Luke Cage due to Jones being hired by Spider-Man's(Miles Morales) grandmother to see what young Miles is up to.  This verbal exchange happens as Spider-Man is on his way to the Triskellion to meet with Tony Stark.  Spider-Man doesn't know what Stark wants, but if Iron Man calls you, it must be important.

I like the multiple stories happening within Spider-Man's life.  Being spied on by Jessica Jones, meeting with Marvel's biggest heroes and being in the midst of the heroes' Civil War.  This story is fun and is definitely going places.  This is the good part.

The dialogue is a bit cheesy.  There are parts that call out the cheesiness but that's not an excuse.  This book is rated T for teen but the cheese goes well below that.  Luke Cage refers to himself as "badassiest."  Maybe I haven't read enough Luke Cage stories, but I never thought of him as a guy that would talk like that.  I hope the Netflix series doesn't do that.

Nico Leon is a very good artist and conveys the story visually in a nice way.  Facial expressions look great as well as overall body language.  There are a lot of emotions within this story and all were represented extremely well through Leon's artwork.

What are your thoughts on Spider-Man?  Do you like Miles Morales being in the same universe as a live Peter Parker?  Are you keeping up with the Civil War II books?

Comic Book Review: Spider-Man #7 - Marvel Comics (2016)

Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Art by Nico Leon
Colors by Marte Gracia
Cover by Sara Pichelli & Jason Keith

Miles Morales is having a hard time sleeping as he isn't sure if he should take up the fight in Civil War II.  Miles' mom is also having a hard time sleeping as she wants to know what private investigator Jessica Jones has found out about her son.

Things have definitely gotten interesting for the younger Spider-Man as he struggles to figure out if he should join the fight or not.  It's even more difficult when you have seen a glimpse of the future and find out the Hulk may be coming after you(not sure if it's the Totally Awesome version or not, I didn't notice an early 2000s faux-hawk).

I like the direction of this comic book series, even if some of the references that are to be made by teenagers are a bit dated(the future's so bright, gotta wear shades - way to stay with the times).  Spider-Man's inner struggle is well done and well thought out.  He knows what he thinks is right but it is still out of his comfort zone.  Heroes are going to be fighting heroes and that can't be high on a young crime-fighter's list of things to do.

Spider-Man's mom is getting awfully close to finding out who he is.  I'd prefer that to not happen as I like the struggle of keeping a secret identity.  His father knows and I like seeing that dynamic at home.

Spider-Man is a good series.  Sure you have to get past some of the dialogue that doesn't seem very natural but the overall story is good and is heading into interesting directions.

One Man's Soap Box: The Unwavering Belief In The MCU

"The Unwavering Belief In Marvel"

In the past few years two things happened, A really good X-Men film and less than acceptable Fantastic Four Movie were made. Worldwide at the box office these two films were at opposite ends of the spectrum. One succeeded while the other failed leaving a $500 mil difference between movies. At the time everyone blamed the quality of Fantastic Four….No argument from me, It sucked. However what was overlooked was the two Marvel movies based on lesser known characters which both ended up grossing as much or even more than the two Fox films.

How did two lesser known Comicbook properties beat the more popular properties in Fantastic Four and X-men? The answer is the Marvel production company.

For fun lets use Spiderman: Homecoming as an example. When Sony and Marvel where able to reach an agreement for Spidey to come to the MCU, it was met with an overwhelming amount of approval. This never surprised me, but what ultimately did was the reaction or commentary which followed. Anyone I’ve spoken to states it will be the best Spiderman film yet, articles I’ve read state the franchise will be saved. All due to the Idea that Marvel is now involved in making the movie.

From my perspective Marvel doesn’t make superior comicbook movies, example “Antman” at best it was a decent fun movie. However with it being attached to MCU its passed as being a better quality film than what it truly was. Try listing 5 of your favorite comic book movies, how many Marvel movies made the list? Did any solo outing make the list or was it both Avenger and Civilwar? My point being is we are more lenient for a MCU property than we are for any other Comicbook property out there. The reason being it has Marvel Attached to it.

I didn’t write this blog to trash the MCU, I’ve loved all of their movies. However, I have recently read to many blogs, seen to many article and talked with to many people who all will dismiss a good DC movie/TV Show, but still watch a Marvel movie of the same quality or less than and praise it. So before preaching about how Spiderman is safe now its with Marvel, remember one things, the company which brought you both Spiderman 3 and Amazing Spiderman 2 is still ultimately in charged and there is a good chance it won’t be better than Batman V Superman.

Stepping off my soap box now.

Comic Book Review: Spider-Man #3 - Marvel Comics (2016)

Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Art by Sara Pichelli

Miles Morales is having a tough time keeping his grades up and being Spider-Man at the same time.  His mother is concerned and brings in her mother to help straighten out young Miles.  Only Miles' father knows the Spider-Man secret so he does not share the same level of concern and is not happy with Grandma's methods.  We also get a cameo from Ms. Marvel and we find out more of how Black Cat feels about the new Spider-Man swinging around town.

Issue number three continues to paint the picture that Miles Morales is a teenager having a tough time dealing with being an adolescent and a superhero at the same time.  Most of this book is devoted to this notion.  I'm hoping Black Cat gets things going pretty quick as I'm looking forward to Spider-Man facing a foe rather than just being a teen and reading attempts at teen talk(does anyone really say totes in seriousness?).

Sara Pichelli is a wonderful artist.  There wasn't much action in this book but there were plenty of emotions and she was able to have the characters show that emotion through their faces and body language.

Comic Book Review: Spider-Man #2 - Marvel Comics (2016)

Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Art by Sara Pichelli
Colors by Justin Ponsor

Spider-Man comes face to face with Spider-Man.  Miles Morales and Peter Parker have a talk about Miles' being Spider-Man and what he needs to watch out for after and even during a battle.  The Demon known as Blackheart left the battle after a venom shot from Morales' Spider-Man but returns in this issue to get revenge on the younger Spidey.

I am enjoying this series so far.  It comes out that under the costume, Spider-Man is a person of "color."  I liked that Miles Morales had a "why should that matter" type of attitude.  I also liked the tease of the next possible villain towards the end of the book.

Sara Pichelli and Justin Ponsor team up to put together some wonderful artwork.  Spider-Man is #2 looks fantastic and every page flows well.  It had to be fun drawing the Avengers, Blackheart and all those Spider-Man action shots.

Comic Book Review: Spider-Man #1 - Marvel Comics (2016)

Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Art by Sara Pichelli
Color by Justin Ponsor

Miles Morales is having a tough time at school and home it's because the guy is Spider-Man.  There are plenty of bad guys to deal with, but in this first issue, Spider-Man, and the rest of the Marvel Universe more than have their hands full.  I included the picture of the Skottie Young cover as the is the issue I received.

This book was a pleasant surprise for me.  I really enjoy Miles Morales as Spider-Man as he has much of the same youthful charm as a young Peter Parker.  The great thing is, we don't need to re-hash old stories as Miles is still young and Peter's story has been told and told and told again inside the comic pages.  Don't fret though true-believers, Peter is still involved in the Spider-Man world.

Brian Michael Bendis is the go-to guy for Marvel if you need a successful well written story.  It's pretty hard not to enjoy his work.  Bendis has been with Marvel a long time and created Miles Morales.

Sara Pichelli's art looks great and panel to panel the flow was wonderful.  She captures facial expressions incredibly well and is excellent with the action shots.  There is plenty of everything you could want from a Spider-Man book in this issue.

With all that said, I felt like Justin Ponsor was an absolute superstar in this book.  Colorists do not, for the most part, get enough credit for what they do in a comic book.  Every page looked amazing, or maybe the word is spectacular(either way, a description fitting for ol' Web-Head).  The colors make this book such a pleasure to look at.

Comic Book Review: Deadpool & the Merc$ for Money #1 - + Bonus Book Spidey #1 - Marvel Comics (2016)

Written by Cullen Bunn
Art by Salva Espin

Deadpool now has a team of men working with him in his mercenary ways.  The latest job did not go as planned and now Deadpool and the Merc$ for Money need to figure out their next move.

This is a fun book with Deadpool leading some of the lesser known characters in the Marvel Universe.  Stingray, Terror, Slapstick, Solo, Masacre and Greg Sallinger - The Fool Killer comprise this team of Marvel's D-List.  The humor is there as you would expect in any Deadpool comic.  Slapstick, the living cartoon, actually gets to take many of the funny lines that you might think would be reserved for Deadpool.  My favorite was when The Foolkiller refers to Slapstick as a cartoon and the reply was, "I prefer Animated American."

Salva Espin does a fine job with the artwork in this comic book.  The task of drawing all of these character, plus some of the wacky bad guys they run into must have been a blast.  This is an entertaining book for all of you Deadpool fans out there.

I received this book in the Comic Block Subscription box and you can read that review here.

This comic book was thicker than I expected and the reason was actually on the cover of the book I received.  It came with a bonus book:

Spidey #1
Written by Robbie Thompson
Art by Nick Bradshaw

Peter Parker fights crime as Spider-Man but that can get tough when you are also going to high school.  Things go awry on a field trip and it's up to Spidey to save the day.

I was a bit skeptical when this book came out.  I figured it was another re-telling of Spider-Man from high school aged Peter Parker.  It is, and you know what?  That isn't the worst thing in the world as this book was a lot of fun.  Plenty of inner monologue from Spidey which makes stopping bank robberies and the destruction of an Oscorp lab much more entertaining.  It's also a book more suitable for all ages(even you grown ups should like it).  The story is told and you're given just enough at the end to make you ready for issue two.

The art looks good in this book and, panel to panel, flows quite nicely.  I like the look of Spidey, his villains and his classmates.  The only thing I really noticed that seemed a bit off is the webbing on the mask.  It apparently does not have a webbed look for the back of his head.

Spidey #1 would make an excellent book to read with the family.  It has action and will keep you entertained but it's also friendly enough to enjoy with a younger audience.

Comic Book Review: Dazzler #1 - Marvel Comics (1981)

Written by Tom DeFalco
Art by John Romita Jr.

Alison Blaire is looking to further her music career and avoid thugs at night.  Fortunately for Alison, she is also known as the mutant called Dazzler.  Dazzler posesses the ability to use sound and turn it into colorful and sometimes blinding lights.  The power comes in handy keep bad guys busy while you hope for Spider-Man or the X-Men to show up.

I was inside of a used book/music store perusing the comic books when I came across this book from 1981.  I think it peaked my curiosity as, one year at Phoenix ComiCon, I went over to Mark Bagley who was at his table drawing.  I was looking to get a couple of comic books autographed and he asked if I wouldn't mind waiting until he was done laying out his art work. It's Mark Bagley for crying out loud, of course I don't mind watching this artist at work.  It was at this point he told me it was his first time drawing Dazzler.  I thought it was pretty awesome to watch him sketching out a character he had not drawn previously.

The store put a price tag of $2.00 on Dazzler #1 so I thought, "why not?"  I'm sure in 1981 people thought the same thing with an original cover price of $.50.  I'm no inflation expert but I'm sure that's not equivalent to the $4.99 comics I'm seeing nowadays.  I enjoyed going through the yellowing pages of Dazzler, reading the descriptive boxes that make for commentary on what is happening in each panel.  I also enjoyed the advertisements.  "Fun Factory" had all the mail order gags and novelty items.  "Mile High Comics" had a list of comic books with prices that you could order by mail.  Yep, mail.  This was before the internet kiddos.

So anyway, back to Dazzler.  This book was filled with guest stars which is probably a good thing.  She would have made more sense as someone in a group.  I guess Dazzler could still work as a comic book.  I feel like you would have to really explore the personal side of Alison Blaire.  While it was explored, there were points of action that just included rudimentary thugs.  For some reason, thugs decide to bust up a school dance forcing Dazzler to use her blinding power.

Apparently this light show is something however.  The Enchantress comes down from Asgard to get a singing gig at a club, but Alison's voice and lights won over the club owner  enough to get over.  The Enchantress wasn't too happy about that and she's going to make them pay, presumably in the next issue.

It's unlikely that I'll get to issue two of Dazzler but it was fun to read through this book.  I hope you all enjoyed this review of a 30+ year old comic book.

Are you a fan of Dazzler?  What other comic books would you like to see reviewed?  Please leave your comments below.

"Captain America: Civil War" and Spider-Man

Concept art via cosmicbooknews.com
Recently we celebrated the 53rd anniversary of “Amazing Fantasy #15” which features the debut of the classic American super hero, Spider-Man! From the pages of comic books to television and then the big screen, fans worldwide have enjoyed the adventures of Spider-Man and all the nefarious villains who stand in his way. He was just your ordinary high school student who was given super powers and then he put on a mask to protect the ones he loved and the people of the city he lived in. Spiderman could be anyone who has it in their heart to do right and protect their family, friends and fellow man; perhaps that’s what makes the character of Spider-Man so endearing all these years.

In May of 2016, directors Anthony and Joe Russo will be presenting the third cinematic version of Spider-Man in their new film “Captain America: Civil War”.  In the comic book world the "Civil War" story line was spread over several titles and ran for over 90 issues. Teams of heroes fighting heroes and villains fighting heroes with Spider-Man caught in the middle. It's highly unlikely that the movie will capture everything in the comic books but it's not hard to imagine at some point in the film Spider-Man will be recruited for Captain America's team and at some point also for Iron Man's team. It's a knock down drag out fight between heroes for what each side believes is best and the movie going audience should be in for a cinematic treat!

Tom Holland (previously in "The Impossible" staring Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts as well as "Locke" staring Tom Hardy) has been cast by Sony and Marvel studios to play “Spidey” for the foreseeable future and it provides the movie going audience a chance to see a sixth Spider-Man film on the big screen in 2017.  Tom Holland now joins the ranks of Tobey Maquire (Spider-Man 2002 - 2007) and Andrew Garfield (Amazing Spider-Man 2012 - 2014) who have played Spider-Man on the big screen prior to Tom putting on the mask. He also joins rank with Paul Soles, (Spider-Man animated TV series 1967 - 1970), Nicholas Hammond (Spider-Man TV series 1977 - 1979), Christopher Daniel Barnes (Spider-Man Animated TV series 1994 - 1998), Neil Patrick Harris (Spider-Man Animated TV series 2003), and finally Drake Bell (Ultimate Spider-Man Animated TV series 2012 - current) who had/have the privilege of bringing the character Spider-Man to life.

As a film franchise it’s a challenge to argue reasons why another Spider-Man movie shouldn’t be made (even with the poorly received “Spider-Man 3” directed by Sam Raimi and  “Amazing Spiderman 2” directed by Marc Webb). With five films now in the can, the Spider-Man franchise has earned more than $3 billion dollars world wide and is the sixth highest grossing film franchise of all time. These types of figures alone provide the strongest argument for additional films in this franchise. Dollars make sense in Hollywood and the movie going public is saying loudly with the dollars from their bank accounts, “We want more Spider-Man!”  And in 2016 and 2017 John and Jane movie goer will get their wish. “Spider-Man” directed by Jon Watts staring Tom Holland as “Peter Parker/Spider-Man” and Marisa Tomei as “Aunt May” with a script being penned by John Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (best known writing for the films, “Vacation” and “Horrible Bosses 2”) is scheduled for tentative release in July of 2017.

Sony and Marvel haven’t yet officially announced who the villain(s) will be in this sixth installment but the gallery of villains who constantly try and thwart “Spidey” is packed with incredible characters. During an interview with Variety, Marvel studio head, Kevin Feige explained that this version of Spider-Man will be like nothing seen previously on the big screen and even went as far as to say he envisioned, stylistically, a "John Hughes" type movie for this particular incarnation of  Spider-Man. Also he went on to say “Right now we’re interested in seeing villains we haven’t seen before” to SlashFilm. That statement alone opens up so many doors for villains like, Black Cat, Scorpion, Shocker, Morbius, Carnage, Kraven the Hunter and Mysterio (Just to name a few).

Be sure to catch up on all the Spider-Man action by watching and/or reading his incredible stories available on Blu-Ray/DVD, Netflix or in the “Spider-Man” comics (of which there are many)! Also, be sure to see Tom Holland swing into action May 6th 2016 as Spider-Man when Marvel Studios releases “Captain America: Civil War!”
