Allied - Box Office Review

It’s officially the season for those dramatic films that are shooting for the glory of “Oscar” winner. We are treated to the best character pieces that examine what it means to be human in certain scenarios and challenges us to examine our thoughts and feelings on the topic. Would we do the same thing? Would we act differently? Can we identify or do we fall back in disgust? So let’s dive in and take a look at “Allied” in this box office review…

First, a film staring Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard is getting my attention. From the first movie trailer I knew I would be in the theater to see this one on the big screen. Plus, we add Jared Harris as a secondary supporting character to Brad Pitt and it’s almost a guarantee the acting will be something special. I was not disappointed. In fact, the story itself was an incredible surprise but more on that later. At opening we meet Brad Pitt’s character and a cab driver. The cab driver was good. I’m telling you folks, even the mostly silent, almost non present, ancillary characters are good. This film doesn’t waste any talent and takes it’s time with each moment they are on screen. Whether the characters are exchanging pithy banter to help add depth to the characters backstories, making them more human, or adding conflict, each moment was calculated and surprising in positive ways for me. Even the short scene where Pitt is leading a small subversive group into the heart of a Nazi German held city center, I bought into it all.

The story was a big surprise for me. I knew from the trailers that the main struggle would be Pitt discovering out if his wife, and mother of his only child, was a Nazi spy or not. However, even knowing that, I did not know how well the story would constantly build tension from start to finish. This is not an exaggeration, the tension builds from the time we see Pitt grab his gun in the very first scene to the finale at the military air base. There are brief little breaks of tension but they don’t last long and it’s building, building, building all over again. The surprises in characters, not knowing 100% who is a spy and who isn’t until the very end, it’s all one great mental and emotional puzzle that pays off at the end.

The most fascinating thing about this story, for me, is that it’s all about Marion Cotillard. Yes, there are two main characters but you must pay close attention to the writing and how Cotillard delivers her lines to truly grasp the quality of this film by the time the finale unveils the answer to the mystery. A woman who, seemingly or genuinely, has a fondness for her husband and daughter, is leading us on through a maze of possibilities and I loved it. The discussion about what her “truth” is can be had at length after watching the film while it’s much clearer understanding for what “truth” was to the character Brad Pitt played. Cotillard was dangerous but innocent. She was revealing but secretive. She played this character to perfection in my opinion and I couldn’t be happier with her performance.

Allied” is in theaters now! If you enjoy character drama films than I recommend this film on the big screen. If you love Oscar contenders I also recommend this film. If you enjoy the main characters I mentioned above, I recommend this movie. I walked out of the theater so pleased with what I just saw and I didn’t think twice about the cost of the ticket. This was a truly engaging film. The story is told so well that even after all is revealed and the credits roll, you still can discuss the film in length and learn more about it.

Comic Book Review: Demonic #1 - Image Comics(2016)

Written by Christopher Sebela
Art by Niko Walter
Colors by Dan Brown
Created by Robert Kirkman & Marc Sylvestri

Demonic is the story about Scott Graves, a police officer who has a secret past with what seems to be a cult.  There is a call that seemed like a regular domestic disturbance but it was far from the usual.  This sets the story in motion and we find out how difficult Graves' life is.  He has a daughter who is mysteriously ill and he finds a way to make her better with the help of a demon named Aeshma.  Getting help from demons usually comes at a price and now Scott Graves must kill for Aeshma.

This book was impressive, especially for a first issue.  The writer, Christopher Sebela, did a wonderful job of introducing characters and has me curious where things are going to go.  It's nice to see some of the side characters get some lines within the panels.  Scott's wife Jamie who knows about the cult, is shown as a concerned wife who keeps her husband on a short leash.  Graves also has a partner named Dani Fischer and she knows plenty of Scott's secrets(including their affair together).  I don't think Fischer knows about the cult however.  The character that Scott is most protective of is his daughter Lucy who has had health issues.  The character that interacts with Scott the most is Aeshma.  Only Scott can see her and she proves to be quite influential on his actions, especially when it comes to Lucy's health.  Also, the word Novo come up a lot.

I really like Niko Walter's art in this book.  There is a lot of character interaction and the body language is on point.  There is also some gore in this book as well.  It 's definitely not for the kiddos but it is incredibly enjoyable.

One more thing that I liked about reading this comic book; there were words to read.  I like when there are panels filled with dialogue.  You get your money's worth when you purchase this issue of Demonic.  With a cover price of $2.99, it's definitely a great value.

What are your thoughts on Demonic?  What comic books are you reading?  What other books do you want Maskerpiece Theatre to review?  Were you expecting this to be a review of a book about the game from the movie "Grandma's Boy?"

Office Christmas Party - Box Office Review

There are holiday movies that are made for the whole family. There are also holiday movies made for a specific demographic, who enjoy a certain style of humor and comedic timing. I believe that this was made for a specific audience but it has enough diversity to also offer a welcome holiday hand to those who just want a comedy to laugh along with. So let’s dive in and take a look at “Office Christmas Party” in this box office review…

From the very first trailer I saw I was ready to see this film. The cast has comedic timing, experience and talent. It’s almost unfair how much comedic talent is in this movie. From the opening dialogue to the very last scene there’s plenty of laughs to enjoy and plenty of predicaments the characters get into. Each character had a specific personality which made the overall story more entertaining and the story itself was constructed fairly well. Overall, it's paint by numbers and you can definitely tell the movement between first, second and third act. However, the movie is called “Office Christmas Party” so I wasn’t expecting a cinematic masterpiece. I set my expectations at “enjoyable comedy” and I wasn’t disappointed.

Jason Batemen was Jason Batemen. TJ Miller was TJ Miller. Olivia Munn and Jennifer Aniston also performed as expected and that’s why I went to see this movie. I had an expectation and they met the expectation. I wasn’t underwhelmed by any of the characters and once again Kate McKinnon was the stand out for me, as she was in the recent “Ghostbusters” film. While her character was a caricature she was still a highlight for me and gave me some of the best laughs. The chemistry between all the characters also worked very well. The two nerds who keep hacking peoples emails and Facebook accounts were just a special prize in this film. And Karan Soni was just a perfect desperate IT nerd. Also, how could I write this review without mention Rob Corddy as the impatient, foul mouthed, insufferable Customer Service Manager. It was all just so much fun.

Office Christmas Party” is in theaters now! If you enjoy modern comedies that have a bit of raunchy humor to them I definitely recommend this movie on the big screen. It met my expectations and even surprised me. I walked out of the theater smiling so hard my cheeks hurt. If you enjoy the cast of characters I mentioned above it’s worth your time and money because they do not disappoint. There’s still a few comedic surprises I left out because I don’t want to spoil the laughs when you finally experience them. I enjoyed this Christmas movie and I hope you do as well.

Bad Santa 2 - Box Office Review

The sequel to a darker holiday film that continues the heist mentality of two morally depraved individuals who, at best, are at their best when stealing from other people or each other. This film takes a deeper look at family and family togetherness during the holidays. It even goes as far as to explore relationships where at least one person isn't completely self absorbed and destructive. So let’s dive in and take a look at “Bad Santa” in this box office review…

This movie was garbage. The emotional side of my brain wants to refer to this film as “abysmal” but it has a few redeeming laughs peppered throughout the film which prevented me from walking out of the theater. The writing is cheap. The characters are, mostly, developed well only because we know them from the first film. The jokes are forced and poorly written. Actually, the entire movie is poorly written. This film felt like 3 dudes and a lady got drunk and stoned and then decided to write a script about characters that have already made an enjoyable film. Short, choppy dialogue that is reminiscent of young adult films like “twilight” made me want to pull my hair out. I enjoy Billy Bob Thornton on screen but even he wasn't enough to save this irredeemable pile of cinematic garbage.

Bad Santa 2” is in theaters now. If you have the opportunity to see this on the big screen, don’t. If you have the opportunity to rent it for 99 cents on RedBox, don’t. Save your money and time. If you ever find yourself completely rocked out of your brain from booze or other things and it comes on a cable station and you can’t find the remote, well ok. You put yourself in that predicament so you have to live with the consequences.

Rules Don't Apply - Box Office Review

Warren Beatty returns to the big screen portraying the eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes in this biopic that examines a possible love story between a two young bright eyed enthusiasts looking to make a mark on Southern California circa 1958 along with their entanglements with Mr Hughes. So let’s dive in and take a look at “Rules Don’t Apply” in this box office review…

Overall I was pleased with the film. It gave me exactly what I was hoping it would which was a fun period piece of Hollywood back in the 50’s. The characters were bit exaggerated but the relationship drama made it feel relatable but still a bit over the top. Everyone played their parts to almost exactness which also made it feel more theatrical and less cinematic. As I continued through the film I wondered how much more enjoyable it would be live on stage because of how the story was presented on screen. In short, you could almost say it feels like a Hallmark or Lifetime film.

The acting talent was spectacular. Warren Beatty, Mathew Broderick, Alden Ehrenreich, Alec Baldwin, Candice Bergen, Martin Sheen and more. There’s almost too much talent in this movie and everyone of them performed well. I don’t recall a single character being a distraction but instead they all fit into the dramatic puzzle playing out on screen. There’s love, angst, jealousy, humor, depression, anxiety, passion and more. It was one of those films that just feels like a refreshing cinematic treat which doesn’t come along often.

The title of the movie stems from a conversation between a driver and budding hollywood wannabe starlet and then evolves into an enchantingly simple piano/vocal ballad. The progression of the character to find herself in a position where the song just comes from within her heart onto the keys of the piano and from her voice was wonderful. I would purchase the song off iTunes for .99 cents in a heart beat. It was simple and charming. It was universal to everyone who’s ever been in love and looked across the table at their lover and told them, the rules don’t apply to you. There was a magical moment captured wonderfully on screen in that exact moment.

Rules Don’t Apply” is in theaters now! As much as I enjoyed this film I won’t recommend you see it on the big screen. The cost of the ticket is only paying for the acting talent and one moment where a song is born. The rest of the film, as I stated previously, feels like a Hallmark or Lifetime movies. It’s great for Sunday afternoons on the couch if you rent it from Redbox or VOD it. It’s a perfect at home relaxing movie because it won’t ask much of you but might give your heart a tickle by the end of the film. I should also caution you that while it has some touching moments, in the end, it’s a man’s decent into isolation and insanity. The story of Howard Hughes doesn’t end well and this movie concludes with that tragic reminder.

Moana - Box Office Review

There’s a possibility you experience some level of confusion on what is a disney animated film and what isn’t. Between Disney Animation and Pixar it can be difficult to stay on top of who is doing what with which characters and what stories. This review will be on a Disney animated feature so let’s dive in and take a look at “Moana” in this box office review…

This is the story of a culture who celebrated their own mythology of gods and men. It looks at the balance of mans contributions while still being under the rule of nature and the effects of a decision a demigod made long ago. The movie examines what it means to unique, to be passionate, determined and also part of something larger, more communal. This is all done through a few characters, a few songs, and a very charming film.

We first meet the mythology of the culture as told by the grandmother of the king. She is considered to be the island “crazy” woman and she is animated and voiced to perfection for this role. From there we see the standard struggle between father and child as the free spirited youth, Moana, desires to explore the ocean and it’s only when the island begins to die that she is able to escape her fathers rule and head out to sea to find the demigod who started the whole matter.
The film blends nicely the balance of male and female empowerment. It’s centered around Moana so there is a lean towards her characters triumphs over Maui the demigods successes but that is to be expected. So, as we have read in Greek mythology it is not the gods who get credit but man for his, or in this case, her efforts to help the demigods and gods overcome a struggle.

The character balance of Moana and Maui was excellent. One, a self centered, narcissist demigod who is hiding more than he is revealing and a determined, passionate, family oriented princess who the ocean, and a bizarre chicken, have taken sides with. The dialogue and interactions between these two characters made the film enjoyable and thankfully so because they were the majority of the movie. Auli’i Cravalho voice Moana well and made her animated character believable. Maui as voiced by “Dwayne (the Rock) Johnson” is as charismatic as always. It’s impossible for this gentleman to be anything but charisma.

Moana” is in theaters now! If you have kids or enjoy Disney animated films I definitely recommend seeing this on the big screen. If you prefer to save your hard earned dollars for holiday shopping I won’t try and convince you otherwise. This movie can equally enjoyed on the big screen as well as your home screen. My only criticism of this film was the song that Jermaine Clement performed midway through the film. I love Jermaine’s talents and his band “Flight of the ConChords” but this song, much like the opening song in “Tangled” felt like a pop tune and not the Disney/Broadway musical stylings I have come to enjoy. Other than that, I enjoyed this film and I definitely recommend you see it, either at the movies as a family or at home as a family. I still don't believe this is the best animated film of the year, "Kubo and the Two Strings" is holding my top spot but it's a great animated film.

Movie Review: Murmur of the Heart (1971)

Murmur of the Heart(Le Souffle Au Coeur) is movie by Louis Malle in the "coming of age" realm.  Fourteen year old Laurent(Benoit Ferreux) is the main character and he gets into all kinds of mischief.  Hustling on the streets for the Red Cross, stealing jazz albums from the local music shops, smoking, drinking, being hit on by a priest and more.  There were aspects of this film I really enjoyed and others that left me upset.  This review goes into detail in some aspects so if you have not seen it and do not want to be spoiled fully, please do not read past the next paragraph.

What I do like about Murmer of the Heart is the progression of Laurent.  He comes from a well to do family but it is a family that has their own issues.  Laurent's father(Daniel Gelin) doesn't show much affection, the mother(Lea Massari) shows entirely too much affection, and the two older brothers(Fabian Ferreux and Marc Winocourt) are just out to have a good time throughout(almost like sexual deviant versions of the twin Weasleys from Harry Potter).  Unlike the Weasley boys, by good time, I mean sexually harassing the maids, comparing penis sizes, getting Laurent drunk, taking their younger brother to a brothel and then interrupting the act.  We will get into the relationship with the mother shortly.

Later in the film, young Laurent is found to have a heart murmur and requires extra special care.
Under unusual circumstances, Laurent must stay in a hotel with his mother and father.  This is where we get much more into Laurent and his mother's odd relationship.  She is very loving but she is also unhappy at home.  Laurent has seen his mother leave with another man at home and he also knows of this person coming to their hotel room.  Laurent loves his mother and supports her decisions.  That love goes to other extremes as Laurent goes to the hotel room when his mother leaves with her undercover lover and puts on her undergarments.  We later find that the man his mother was having the affair with did not want to continue.   Lea Massari is a beautiful woman and it is played up in this film.  Every man and boy wants to be with her and this upsets Laurent.  This all culminates on Bastille Day where, during the celebration, multiple men are vying for the affection of Laurent's mother.  The two of them leave drunkenly back to the hotel room.  It's just the two of them and they show each other how much they love each other the way no mother and son should.  Oddly enough, neither is ashamed.  The mother, realizing what happened, lets Laurent know it can't happen again although she will look back at it as something beautiful.

The progression throughout this movie was shot wonderfully and that was the aspect I really enjoyed.  Unfortunately, I figured there was going to be some sort of incest in this film the way the boys played with each other and the smothering nature of the amazingly attractive mother.

I received this movie in the Boxwalla Film Subscription Box.  You can read my reviews of those boxes at HelloSubscription.
