Some movies are made for a single purpose, like action. The high body count, explosions aplenty, overly attractive females and testosterone fueled dudes who are hell bent on not only stopping the bad guy but destroying everything in their way. It’s popcorn fun and it doesn’t require much mental energy from the viewers. So let’s dive in and take a look at “XXX: Return of Xander Cage” in this box office review…
D.J. Caruso steps into the directors role for this particular film. I appreciated the look of this film and how he shot the action sequences. There were a few moments where it’s clear that stunt doubles were at work because the angles where a little too tight to see faces but all in all it didn’t take away from the energy that each sequence gave us and the edits looked clean which helps keep our eyes focused on the action, or the body parts of the attractive females in this film who had one extreme close up after another. The special effects were over the top and noticeable but I gave them a pass because it’s just an action film and it met my exceptions.
Overall, the cast was entertaining as well. The actor who stole the film for me was Donnie Yen. His fight scenes looked great and with the new rumors circulating that he could be “Namor the Submariner” I’m on board. He’s a great action star and his ability to present hand to hand combat on the big screen was definitely a bonus. Vin Diesel was, more or less, the same character he plays in his other franchise, “Fast and Furious,” and that’s ok. The movies make money. They’re entertaining. They don’t pretend to be more than they are and they keep getting better.
“XXX: Return of Xander Cage” might still be in some theaters. If you have a Saturday or Sunday afternoon off and want a fun flick to see on the big screen, check it out. It’s worth matinee prices. The explosions and action all look great on the big screen. Bring your popcorn and soda because this movie is made for snacking. It’s just fun that excites. Plus there’s a few surprises throughout with some characters that showed us the writers cared a little more than they probably needed to, which is ok too.
