The Mandalorian: Chapter One (Spoiler Free) Review

The Mandalorian: Chapter One

Director: Dave Filoni

Writers: Jon Favreau (Creator)

Starring: Pedro Pascal, Omid Abtahi, Mark Boone Junior

The moment has arrived Disney+ is here! Which means… The Mandalorian is here for our viewing pleasure! Or well an episode is, sorry binge watchers we’re going to have to go at this one episode at a time. You could wait to binge, but honestly DON’T! This 40-minute show will give you those warm Star Wars sensations we all love with a cliffhanger that will make your jaw drop! I’m not using a figure of speech here guys, my jaw literally dropped!

Director Dave Filoni and Writer/Creator Jon Favreau do a wonderful job of building this small part of the Star Wars universe so that the whole show feels familiar and new all at the same time. The visuals and overall vibe of the show make it feel like you are watching one of the movies while at the same time introducing new characters and worlds to sink our teeth into.

The only (sort of) spoiler I’m going to put in here… that honestly isn’t really a spoiler, but don’t be overly excited for an opening crawl, sorry friends. While I love the crawl too, these episodes are around 40 minutes and time is too precious for the crawl. Once the episode gets going though, you don’t even notice it missing so I’m cool with its absenteeism. We still get some cool Star Wars editing tricks and overall vibes throughout, including a little comedy at the poor droids expense.

Even though this episode had a lot of good moments in the short amount of time, it’s really all about the ending. I’m sure no one saw it coming and thanks to that massive cliffhanger, I’m going to be chomping at the bit to see what comes next! The second episode will be out Friday, November 15th. And now we wait.

If you have watched the episode, what did you think? Let me know in the comments below.

Just so everyone is aware, I’m going to include the episode release dates:

Episode 1: Tuesday, November 12th (like seriously watch it already)
Episode 2: Friday, November 15th
Episode 3: Friday, November 22nd
Episode 4: Friday, November 29th
Episode 5: Friday, December 6th
Episode 6: Friday, December 13th
Episode 7: Wednesday, December 18th (psst this is the week The Rise of Skywalker comes out)
Episode 8: Friday, December 27th

2019 Phoenix Fan Fusion

Image result for phoenix fan fusion

Prepare yourself Phoenix! Fan Fusion is coming! Thousands of fanatics from all walks of life are about to invade the streets of downtown in hopes to mingle and celebrate all things fandom. With a little over a week to go from this year Phoenix Fan Fusion, taking place May 23-26, final preparations are taking place.  From artists to actors and cosplayers to gamers, you are pretty much guaranteed to see something that will put a smile on your face.

Every year this event seems to get bigger than the previous year with different big names actors brought in for meet and greets/photo ops along with the brilliant minds behind our favorite comic books and stories, the four-day event always has something going on for everyone.  This years biggest actors include Jeff Goldblum, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Summer Glau, John Barrowman, Catherine Tate, Elijah Wood, Matthew Lewis and many more. If the comics are more your speed, don’t you worry, they’ve got some pretty great artists coming as well like Neal Adams, Kevin Eastman, Joe Staton, Joel Gomez, Seanan McGuire, James C. Mulligan, Dennis O’Neil… honestly the list just keeps going. The great thing with the artists though, most of them have tables on the exhibitor floor, so if you aren’t able to make it to a panel to see them, they are usually pretty accessible at their tables. Side note, if you have a favorite comic or print from any of them, bring it! They will most likely sign it for you and usually will have a pretty decent conversation with you at the same time.

Along with appearances, there are also panels. SO MANY PANELS!!! There is pretty much a panel for everything… like almost everything. Make sure you check out the schedule to see if there are any workshops or celebrity panels you want to attend and set a reminder to make sure you don’t miss it. The panels are a great opportunity for fans to ask questions and learn new things, also they are a great chance to sit down for an hour or so and relax. To top it off, panels are also a great way to meet other fans who maybe in the same fandoms as you, which honestly is one of the best parts of these cons.

Also, don't be afraid to venture outside of the con. Many restaurants and stores have sales and specials to go along with the Con. Plus, there are usually food trucks and possibly local breweries and other drink specials.

It wouldn’t be fair to not issue a couple warnings for this event as well. Sounds scary right, but be prepared. Like actually be prepared. This event is huge! So bring those walking shoes because you are going to be using them! Also, hydration! It’s very important everyone. We are in a desert and this event has the unbelievable habit of landing on one of the hottest weekends of the year. Be patient, there are going to be lines. Take the opportunity to strike up a conversation or maybe post some of those pictures you've been taking, it will honestly make it feel like the line is moving faster.

Last, but not least, have fun. Everyone is here to have a good time and for the most part everyone acts that way. This very large group of people might very well be the nicest mob of people you will ever encounter. So if you see some thing you like, stop and talk about it.  If it’s something at a booth for sale, talk to the artist/maker. They might even have something else you might like more. If you see a cosplay you think is great, let them know. Most will even take pictures with you, but remember, Cosplay is not consent! On that note, see you all next week!

Make sure to use your hashtags when posting pictures: #DYIG #PHXFanFusion

"Darkest Hour" - Movie Review

Germany is advancing its forces across Western Europe. Belgium is about to fall and the French are about to surrender. Concern is mounting in the United Kingdom that Hitler’s Nazi forces are positioning themselves to cross the divide and begin bombing runs on the Island. The fate of the Kingdom is looking grim and a newly appointed Prime Minister has the weight of Western Europe on his shoulders. So, does “The Darkest Hour” paint an accurate picture of Churchill’s life in this dark time or should we abandon this film? Let’s dive in and take a look in this review.

This is the third film in a years time that examines the events leading up to, beyond or singularly Dunkirk and World War 2. Two of the three films examine the appointment of Winston Churchill while the other examines what life on the beaches of Dunkirk must have been like during that time of war. All three films have a different approach to how the story is told but each enjoyable for that specific reason. I can say this as I have seen and reviewed all three films (Churchill, Dunkirk and Darkest Hour).

Gary Oldman deserves all the high praise he has received for his portrayal of Churchill. He delivers a performance that is a complete transformation into his role. Unlike the movie “Churchill” this film looks more at the human side of Winston and how its no simple task to be the voice of opposition as a leader whose leadership abilities are already in question before even having accepted the role of Prime Minister. It’s clear from the beginning that the parties and the King of England are all hesitant in the decision to bring Churchill to the valued and important role of Prime Minister. In fact, he is not their first choice in the decision to replace the current Prime Minister and they explain why. So we get a clear sense of who he is before we meet him and a glimpse at why he comes across as bullish or unflexable.

The supporting cast in this film does well enough to seem believable without overshadowing Oldman’s performance. Ben Mendelsohn as the King came across as determined, thoughtful and understanding. Lily James has once again delivered a performance that was enchanting. Her role as Churchill’s personal assistant was believable and the emotion that she delivers on screen added much to the moments she shares with Oldman. Overall, the roles that everyone had to play they did a fine job with. If any two actors stood out, it was Oldman and James.

“Darkest Hour” is playing in theaters now! I am definitely recommending a big screen viewing of this film. While you could easily skip this film until it’s available on DVD/BLU-Ray and get just as much from the story, you would miss out on the opportunity to talk about the importance of the story, Winston Churchill, and how well shot this movie was. Director Joe Wright did a great job slowing moving in and backing away from characters using just the right amount of speed on the camera. The color pallets used to help emphasize the mood of each scene was also very enjoyable. This is a dramatic story that looks at humans as fallible, passionate, determined, intelligent, caring and more. So much of the human experience is wrapped up in each of these characters as they contemplate what it would mean to surrender to the Nazi’s or fight until all lives have been lost. Go see this film!

"I, Tonya" - Movie Review

The 1990’s brought about quite a few memorable moments that have been etched in time. The beating of Rodney King and the Los Angeles riots that followed shortly after. O.J. Simpson being found not guilty by a jury of his peers. A draft dodger is elected President of the United States of America. And then there was the crippling of Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan. The world was shocked when a man smashed her leg with a baton for, at the time, unknown reasons. So, does “I, Tonya” deliver the answers to the question of why or do we score this film with zero’s across the board? Let’s dive in and take a look in this review.

The story examines the life of competitive figure skater Tonya Harding (played by Margot Robbie). We get to meet her devious and despicable mother (played by Allison Janney), her future husband/ex-husband (played by Sebastian Stan), his best friend Shawn (played by Paul Walter Hauser) and many other characters as the story of her life unfolds. The overall point of the film isn’t as simple as merely “this is what happened in Detroit in 1994.” It’s a layered look at the abusive lifestyle Tonya grew up in and how she views herself as a victim/survivor through it all. We get to hear from the people in her life during this time as well and how they perceived things. It also examines the events from the view point of a “journalist” named Martin Maddox (played by Bobby Cannavale). It’s this back forth exploration of people’s recollection of events and how they might or might not be similar to the story that we knew of (assuming you’re as old as I am or older) that really made this an engaging movie.

The performances given by Robbie and Janney are superb. There’s an entire close up on Robbie’s face as she’s getting ready to compete that shows incredible emotional range and believability. Janney plays the role of wicked mother to perfection and she seems to do it effortlessly. Finally, the big surprise for me was neither of those performance but Paul Walter Hauser. I am not overly familiar with his work and he plays the most calm, crazy and absurd character here. His character felt like something from a comedy but then you realize his character is actually based on a real life person who actually thinks and acts that way. His performance elevated the film to new heights. The mosaic of personalities was so rich that every second on screen felt like this insane comedy that was both disturbing and hilarious. Upon leaving the theater, I actually wondered if I was supposed to laugh as much as I did considering the topic of the film. However, this movie balances humor with insanity so well that I was completely satisfied with my time spent in the theater.

“I, Tonya” is in theaters now. I definitely recommend a big screen viewing only so that you enjoy all the shocking moments on screen in a room full of strangers who also love movies. This is an incredible story that looks at life from several vantage points and it does so brilliantly. I would honestly be surprised if this film isn’t up for consideration come the Academy Awards this year. Margot Robbie and Allison Janney are absolutely delivering some of the best performances in this film. I was completely overwhelmed by how much I enjoyed this movie, the cast of characters and how the story is delivered. I am definitely recommending you get out and see this film on the big screen. Check it out!

"All the Money In the World" - Movie Review

The film was almost completed. The release date was approaching. Then, one of the main characters was cut from the film and recast in an unprecedented fashion! All of that characters scenes were reshot and the film was still released on time. So, was “All the Money In the World” able to deliver an engaging and captivating story or does this film better serve assisting those who need a natural sleep aide? Let’s dive in and take a look in this review.

First, director Ridley Scott did a fantastic job getting all the emotions from his actors. He didn’t just pull the best of a character from the main characters, but even the side characters who may have only been in a single scene. For example, there’s a scene where a teenage John Paul (Charlie Plummer) is eating at a police officers home and the wife of the Italian cop is delivering a powerful performance (in almost complete silence) letting us know that all is not as well as young John Paul seems to believe. It’s moments like this that are strewn throughout this movie that really elevate this film from adequate to incredible.

The only real issue I had with this film is the pacing. There were some moments that really move and then other moments that linger and crawl by. It’s because of this, the film feels much longer than it is. Towards the end of the film I was beginning to wonder how much longer the film was going to be and, to my surprise, when I saw the run time was just over 2 hours I was shocked. It felt like I was in the theater for almost 3 hours. So, had the pacing and tempo of the film been more consistent I think I would’ve enjoyed the overall film more.

The story is written well. We get a sense of the Getty family, everyone’s role in the family, and the patriarchs grand view of where he see’s his family going. He wants the Getty name to become an American dynasty and he takes good care to ensure that they will. And while he, J. Paul Getty (Christopher Plummer), seems to be cold and calculated we get a strong sense that he is not merely this way but heavily invested in those who share his name and are of his bloodline, more than he lets on.

“All the Money In the World” is playing at your local theater now! I’m not gonna recommend a big screen viewing for this film. While I do encourage everyone to see this film once it’s available for streaming or rental, you won’t lose anything by seeing this in the comfort of your home. It’s a well acted film that drags on at times but overall delivers on a complex story about family and what it means to have all the money in the world. Check it out!

Molly's Game - Movie Review

Training for the olympics takes a level of dedication, endurance and focus that very few people have. Individuals who possess these incredible qualities and are able to perform at such a level of excellence they’re selected to represent their country are celebrated by the world every four years. We always hear about the winners. What happens to those who don’t make it? What becomes of their lives? Great questions. I like where your heads at. Let’s see if “Molly’s Game” is able to answer those questions or if it goes full tilt, in this review.

This film is based on the real life story of Molly Bloom, former world class professional skier, now turned entrepreneur who ran high stakes poker games for Hollywood celebrities, Wall Streeters, the mob and more. Eventually, her story peaked the interest of the FBI and that’s the story this film looks to explore. We get to meet Molly, her family, and a few curious characters who frequent her games, as well as, a few attorneys. In all, everyone feels like they play a very specific purpose for moving the plot forward to tell the story as it was intended to be told. There is no fluff or extravagance in this film. It examines the events of Molly’s life leading up to the arrest by the FBI, the relationship she develops with her attorney, and specific moments that occurred during her time running these high dollar poker games and the emotional impact it had on her family upon their discovery of the legal trouble she has fallen into.

Overall, the story is written well enough but it’s the dialogue that shines. The story structure moves quickly and with exactness. The interactions the characters have is where we are treated to exposition and points of view that are often conflicting, which gives us as an audience more to think about during and after the movie. Each character is there for a specific reason and their perspectives either challenge Molly’s view of things, support them or create potentially life threatening moments. In all, the dialogue is often as quick as the tempo of the film but I found it to be the highlight of the movie.

Regarding the actors, I wasn’t blown away by any single performance. I thought everyone was fine in their role and they all complimented each other so that it felt like an ensemble piece even though the story is entirely about Molly and her poker game. Jessica Chastain (Molly Bloom) seemed comfortable and believable. Since I am unaware of the real life story or person I can’t speak to how accurate a portrayal she gave as Molly, but, I found her onscreen presence enjoyable once I understood the rhythm/pattern of thought and speech she had to give. Idris Elba (Attorney Charlie Jaffey) played a nice emotional counter to her rigid and calculating personality. The two of them I thought worked well against each other, however, I didn’t walk out of the theater expecting them to both be nominated for their roles.

“Molly’s Game” is playing in your local theater now! I enjoyed my time in the theater with this film and I’ll recommend you check it out on the big screen only if you enjoy court room legal dramas and biography style films. If you prefer action, lusty romance, lots of special effects, robots or monsters, this is definitely not the movie for you. This is a dramatic movie that is well paced and well written. It’s people talking about life, their experiences, view points and hopes. If “Oscar Season” is your favorite time of year for film, this is the movie for you. Check it out!
