A Night Out With Kevin Smith (Q&A Show) - Review

Kevin Smith @ The Rialto Theater, Tucson, Arizona
I’m sitting in the crowded two-floor Rialto theater in Tucson, Arizona. It’s hot and muggy from the people crammed into the theater. I am four rows back and It smells like sweat and desperation. These are my people.

We’re waiting for our lemming leader, Kevin Smith to come out and spew forth stories of his life in acting, directing and general existing in the entertainment world. And I wonder if after being at four of his events prior to today, there will be overlap in the stories he tells as he appears on stage. He is smaller than I remember, nearly half the size he was when I first saw him in Red Bank, New Jersey; but he is dressed the same. He is consistently dressed in “jorts” as he references in his opening speech and a hockey jersey of some sort, all with the number 37 on them.

For those that are unfamiliar with Kevin Smith and what his events are like, generally they are a question and answer forum in which a few (likely only 2-4) people from the audience ask him a question. At which point Smith will begin babbling about some story relating or not relating in his life that can last for 15 minutes to 2 hours.  This event is no different and his first story discusses Jason Mewes obsession with the CW and how he came to work on The Flash and Supergirl. (Side note: these shows are awesome and you should all be watching them.)

He discusses his fanboy attitude towards the show and childlike wonder for the magic that is created behind the scenes and how the zoop becomes a thing in the show. The “zoop” is of course, relating each respective character appearing or disappearing from screen using their super powers (Flash’s running, Supergirl’s flying.)

Each story seems to meld into-one another. And while the questions can vary from the audience, we are a specific breed of nerd and thus quite possibly predictable (insert sex jokes and Star Wars references.) And without warning, Smith launches into what I dub as Grandpa Smith, dispelling his knowledge, empowering and imploring us to create. Anything. To write, to sing, to act, to tell our story, insisting that each of us is unique. And then feverishly he notes that anyone can create a podcast and how in the beginning we will draw from those who inspire us before eventually finding our own voice. And it costs us nothing to create.

Kevin Smith @ The Rialto Theater in Tucson, Arizona
Smith insists on the need for one to create and cultivate ourselves.  I am unexpectedly inspired. I’ll be honest, Smith had never really created that feeling for me before. Sometimes disgust, sometimes admiration, even a little jealousy for his lifestyle, but never inspired. I’m in it for the charming abrasive personality and the good looks and of course he makes movies I can get into.  (Yes, Yes I do have a crush on Kevin Smith… fight me?) (Side note: Please do not fight me, I am weak, I will not win.)

For as much as Kevin talks about rolling onto stage and spewing forth his words, I suspect that there is more planning to the execution then he leads on because the stories and ties flow effortlessly together and we are all laughing every three to four seconds with his expressions and punchline deliveries. Even more so is his ability to uplift his fans and ask for greatness from them. He is brilliant, hilarious, deep but also shallow and unabashed in his nerd-tendencies and this night was awesome.

Comic Book Review: The Flash #21 - DC Comics (2017)

"The Button" part 2
Written by Joshua Williamson
Art by Howard Porter
Colors by Hi-Fi

The Flash is investigating the Bat-Cave, the scene where his nemesis, The Reverse Flash aka Eobard Thawne, met his demise(see Batman #21).  Upon his investigations, The Flash decides he must look for clues in a way only The Flash is able to do.

"The Button" story line is blowing me away.  I am thoroughly enjoying what this cross-over event is bringing to the table.  Flash and Batman teaming up to travel through time and universes to find out who or what killed the man who murdered Barry Allen's(The Flash) mother is a recipe for a whole lot of awesome.  The scenes from the time stream were absolutely incredible.  For the DC fans who did not love the "New 52" as much as I did will be happy to see many of the scenes from this comic book.  For those that liked the characters from the Flashpoint series, there is a really cool appearance from someone very familiar to Bruce Wayne(Batman).

Howard Porter's artwork is spectacular in this comic book.  There is so much going on in each panel as he has a full background in just about all of them.  Pairing this art with Joshua Williamson's brilliant storytelling is absolutely extraordinary.  Get to your local comic shop and buy these books before they are gone.

What are your thoughts on "The Button" story?  Which comic book event are you most excited for?  Let us know through social media.

Comic Book Review: Batman #21 - DC Comics (2017)

"The Button" Part 1
Written by Tom King
Pencils and Inks by Jason Fabok
Colors by Brad Anderson

Batman is investigating the button that was mysteriously found during the Rebirth comic book.  Upon finding something unexpected, Batman contacts The Flash who was in the middle of a fight.  Before the Flash could dispose of his foes and get to the Bat-Cave, Batman has a visitor.  Don't read any further if you do not want any spoilers.

This is how you kick of a comic book event.  I am all in on finding out more about this mysterious button as this appears to be a Watchmen tie-in.  Batman sees his father from an alternate universe and also gets into a tussle with the Reverse Flash.  Reverse Flash claims to see God at the end of the comic before he looks to be burned away.  It looks like the aftermath of those that cross Dr. Manhattan(or is that just something we are lead to believe?).

Jason Fabok is an absolutely fantastic person to be doing the art for this comic book.  I've been a huge fan of his work for some time and I really enjoy the way he draws all of the heroes and villains of the DC Universe.  I'm looking forward to seeing more of his work as this story progresses.

Comic Book Review: The Flash #6 - DC Comics (2016)

"Revenge"

Written by Joshua Williamson
Art by Carmine Di Giandomenico
Colors by Ivan Plascencia

Central City had a storm caused by the Speed Force a few issues back that caused many normal people to attain powers just like The Flash.  Since then, a villain named Godspeed has emerged and has begun killing the new speedsters and taking those powers for himself.  The Flash thought he had found and stopped Godspeed but he was wrong and is now on the hunt for him.

This series keeps getting better and better.  I like what Joshua Williamson is doing with the story and causing Barry more heartbreak than most could handle.  Barry does stay ever vigilant which is why he is one of the greatest superheroes of all time.  The reveal at the end of who Godspeed is will really have you wondering what the Flash should do next.

Carmine Di Giandomenico has an interesting artistic style.  I like a lot of the action poses and Ivan Plascencia's colors look wonderful.  This is definitely a splendid read with fun visuals.

Titans Rebirth - Comic Book Review

The DC Rebirth saga continues with Titans and Wally West is trying to solve the mystery that is plaguing the entire DC universe. So let's dive in and take a look at "Titans Rebirth" in this comic book review...

The issue starts off with Wally realizing he's gonna need the help of his old team, the Titans. The only problem is that the team doesn't remember him & assumes he's an intruder. A sudden curious occurrence helps Wally restore fragments of memory to his friends but it still doesn't answer the bigger question affecting the DC Universe but the team realizes they need to get ready.

Overall, the story was pretty simple. The dialogue was also pretty minimal however it was appropriate. There's a nice explanation regarding Wallys absence & what he's been witnessing while gone. In 1 issue we also get a clear sense of the importance his friends have in his life. These aren't just super hero's but friends, dare I say, family to Wally. The struggle he faces during this issue of trying to reason with them while they attack him was fun to read.

The artwork in this issue was visually delightful. There is some dark room fight sequences, then bright colored rooms with hugs, the ocean landscaping & more. This issue really travels around and it all looks vibrant and well drawn. The fight sequences looked pretty cool as well as we are treated to the different skill sets of the heros attacking Wally & his reactions. Overall, the story looks great and was a treat for my eyes.

I'd recommend this series for the reasons listed above as well as this appears to be the glue that connects all the other stories together. I could be wrong. I've only read this first issue but the feeling I got was that the writers are using this story to tie all the mystery up that is looming over the DC universe right now. It's a quick read but it looks great. Go visit your local comic book store and pick this issue up! Oh, tell them Maskerpiece Theatre sent you.

Comic Book Review: The Flash Rebirth #1 - DC Comics (2016)

"...Doomed To Repeat It..."

Written by Joshua Williamson
Art by Carmine Di Giandomenico
Colors by Ivan Plascencia

The Flash finds Wally West from an alternate reality and is on a quest to figure out what is going on with the visions he is having.  This book runs parallel with the DC Rebirth comic book.

The Flash Rebirth #1 is an absolutely fantastic read.  If you have been reading The Flash from the the previous "New 52" line, this is a continuation.  This book is also for those who hearken to DC's past story lines.  The Flash also appears to be the comic book to follow to see what truly caused the "New 52" and who appears to be "watching" them.  There is also a great team up in this book and that should keep readers happy.

The art is fun and vibrant.  I enjoyed the scenes of the Flash and Wally running and all of the interactions.  The Flash Rebirth #1 was incredibly enjoyable.

(Review) DC Universe Rebirth Issue 1

I wasn't certain where my expectations should be for this new start on familiar titles of DC comic lore. I know that comic book shops and DC have been publicizing this issue quite heavily on social media. It has been the "talk of the town" if you will, since it was introduced. Curiousity prevailed and I found myself in a comicbook shop in San Diego purchasing this title. I'm on vacation? Not anymore. I'm pausing that so I could read this issue and write about it for everyone who follows us. So let's dive in and read about my thoughts on this first issue entitled, "DC Universe Rebirth".

The story starts off with us discovering that a Flash is responsible for trying to solve the mystery that these new issues will be attempting to explain. Flash certainly has his work cut out for him as it's unclear whether or not he'll survive his travels or be lost in the speed force forever as he travels from hero to hero searching for someone who remembers him. He needs help trying to discover who is the time thief that appears more powerful than Darkseid.

From there we are introduced to many other characters and it's explained that someone is not tampering with the timeline but actually stealing time and feelings from all the timelines thus creating new concepts for familiar hero's and villains. This reality even altered romantic relationships and changed lovers to colleagues, left feeling an unexplainable loss. Also, it's revealed that some of what we thought we knew about certain powers aren't actually accurate and there's more at stake than previously imagined.

Overall, I enjoyed this issue. Introducing so many characters, concepts and storylines could be considered a Herculean task and I felt this first offering did well enough to establish where DC comics is headed. Plus seeing Doctor Fate make a sudden appearance is always cool.

I can understand the frustrations that some folks might have on starting or rebooting the comics all over again. I can also see the side of those who feel this move is nothing more than a cash grab DC might be achieving. All that considered, I enjoyed this first introductory issue. It was only $2.99 to see where the universe is headed and it's worth it. I'll still read the "New 52 Deathstroke" for as long as they print them and I might start reading some of this new Aquaman if I'm feeling adventurous. Who knows? I'm just saying I enjoyed this first issue.

Comic Book Review: The Flash #51 - DC Comics (2016)

"Under the Gun"
Written by Van Jensen
Art by Gus Vazquez & Joe Eisma

The Riddler has revealed himself as the one who has put the drones throughout the city and the overall architect of the plan to take out the Flash.  The Scralet Speedster definitely has his hands full with the Riddler as he is a villain that has back up plans for his back up plans.

I am a huge fan of this series.  I'm kind of sad knowing that the rebirth is coming soon and this may bring the closing of this book series.  Van Jensen is writing an amazing story that I don't want to end.  I like when villains from other comic books come through to take on heroes that they would normally never see.  I'm looking forward to seeing what the Riddler really wants in Central City.

This book has gone through many artists and art styles since Brett Booth, Norm Rapmund and Andrew Dalhouse left.  It looks good but it's kind of odd when you are binge reading.

Comic Book Review: The Flash #50 - DC Comics (2016)

Written by Van Jensen
Art by Jesus Merino & Paul Pelletier

The Flash is under arrest and being taken to Iron Heights Prison.  That's where the action really takes place and we also get the huge reveal of who has been so bent on getting the Flash put away.

This book blew me away.  I loved seeing what happened with Iron Heights prison and that wasn't even as big as the reveal of who the Trickster has been getting his tech from.  Van Jensen has written an amazing story arc and I am looking forward to the next issue.

The art looks fantastic.  This is especially the case once the scene moves to Iron Heights Prison.  I really liked the way the villains were drawn once the story got there.

There was also a bonus story at the end of this book.

Wally West, The Fastest Kid Alive in WWFD
Written by Van Jensen
Art by Joe Eisma

Wally West recognizes he is going through some changes and is hoping to find ways to deal with it.

This was a fun story.  Wally West in gym class and being able to talk to his future self and find out he is a speedster.  This was an absolute joy to read.  Kids discussing what they would do if they had the Flash's powers and Wally getting to use his powers without anyone knowing.

The art looks good too.  All the facial expressions look great, especially when the kids look surprised.

Comic Book Review: The Flash #49 - DC Comics (2016)

"New Blood"

Written by Robert Venditti & Van Jensen
Art by Philippe Briones

The Rogues are on the police task force to bring in the Flash.  Forensic specialist Barry Allen is also on the task force and must analyze the blood of the Flash.  The Trickster, a newcomer to the Rogues, appears to have more going on than just helping his fellow teammates.  Wally West is in school but he is dealing with some physical changes that he can't quite explain.

The Flash being hunted by the police has become a better story line than I had originally imagined.  Seeing Barry wrestle with right and wrong and how he should handle being on a task force to hunt himself is fantastic story telling by Robert Venditti and  Van Jensen.

Philippe Briones is in charge of the art for this issue and does well.  I don't know if he is the long term artist as last month was someone else and this is all after the super group of Brett Booth, Norm Rapmund and Andrew Dalhouse have moved on to other projects.

The Flash is definitely one of the comic books I look forward to each month.  The writers are crafting such excellent stories and it's a lot of fun with each issue.  I'm sure there has to be something big planned for the next issue as that is number fifty!

Comic Book Review: The Flash #48 - DC Comics (2016)

"Public Enemy"

Written by Robert Venditti & Van Jensen
Art by Jesus Merino

Even after Zoom has been put into Iron Heights Prison, the Flash is still a wanted man.  Barry Allen has been chose by Captain Frye to be part of a task force to take down the Flash.  Barry is in for a huge surprise when he finds out who is on the team.

There is a reason I buy the Flash every month and issue number 48 shows why.  Robert Venditti and Van Jensen have put the Scarlet Speedster in some incredibly impossible situations.  At all times, you know the Flash is the hero even if so many others have given up on him.  Incorporating his biggest foes and making them the heroes has made for awesome story telling.

Issue number 48 marks the beginning of Jesus Merino on art for the Flash.  I have not heard if he is the full time replacement for the series or not, but he does add an element of fun to the book.

Comic Book Review: The Flash #47 - DC Comic (2016)

"Reunion"

Written by Robert Venditti & Van Jensen
Art by Brett Booth, Norm Rapmund & Andrew Dalhouse

The Flash continues his battle with Professor Zoom.

Get ready for a wild ride through time as we see the Flash fight Professor Zoom.  Zoom attempts to use Barry's father against him and monologues through the entire fight explaining his obsession with the Scarlet Speedster.  There are flashbacks to the killing of Barry Allen's mother Nora and there are also glimpses into the future illustrating why Zoom feels the way he does about the Flash.

This is a true all star team of talent working on this series.  Robert Venditti and Van Jensen are awesome with their story telling.  There wasn't a dull moment with this issue.  The team of Breet Booth on pencils, Norma Rapmund on inks and Andrew Dalhouse providing the colors make every page feel cover-worthy.  Every panel looks amazing in the Flash #48 and with every book they've worked on since coming to this series.  I'm sad to say that they are leaving this title but I will be picking up whichever book this group goes to(hopefully they continue working together).

Comic Book Review: Justice League #46 - DC Comics (2015)

Written by Geoff Johns
Art by Francis Manapul

The Darkseid War rages on.  Darkseid is dead and now everyone is after the Anti-Monitor, but only after they're done with each other.  Cyborg, Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor have enlisted the help of Mister Miracle and he has the help of his new bride, Big Barda.  With nobody knowing how to defeat their largest nemesis todate, our heroes need to turn to a group that had their planet destroyed by the Anti-Monitor.  Other members of the Justice League now have god-like powers and that has corrupted many of their minds.
Batman: God of Knowldge
Superman: God of Strength
The Flash: God of Death
Shazam: God of Gods
Green Lantern: God of Light
Lex Luthor: God of Apokolips

If you have not been keeping up with this story, things may be a bit confusing for those jumping in.  There are a lot of moving pieces to this war.  As one can imagine, this is a team book with a lot of personalities and many things going on.  As you see above, many of the heroes have been corrupted with unfathomable power so the heroes on Earth no need to turn to a very unlikely source.  Fans of the Forever Evil story line should be excited.

I've enjoyed Justice League from the start.  This series is not following the stories of the individual books as Bruce Wayne is Batman, Superman still has powers and there's a giant war happening.  It would be difficult to weave this level of war into the individual hero books without confusing the readers.  I used to be against this but, as long as I know it's a different place in the multi-verse, I'm okay with it.  Besides, how is Batman really supposed to be in all of these different books?

What are your thoughts on the Justice League?  Are you enjoying the Darkseid War?  What other comic books would you like the Maskerpiece Theatre staff to review?  Leave your comments below.

Comic Book Review: The Flash #46 - DC Comics (2015)

Written by Robert Venditti & Van Jensen
Art by Brett Booth, Norm Rapmund & Andrew Dalhouse

Central City police want to arrest the Flash for the bombing of the police station but the Scarlett Speedster knows he can't take the time to talk with them as he knows he needs to stop Professor Zoom and his group of villains.

Fast and incredible action can be found on every page of this comic book issue.  Zoom has been trying to build the Flash as a threat to Central City so that if he does beat our hero, he isn't revered in his death.  This is no easy task and really isn't something he can push any longer as the fight is on.  Zoom has his super-powered villain group that is assisting, outside of Magali who he has since imprisoned along with Henry Allen, the Flash's father.  Henry was brought on to build a device that steals meta-human powers.  If he built a device that could steal the Flash's powers, Professor Zoom would let Barry Allen live.  Little does Henry know who the Flash truly is.

Caught up yet?  I know, there's a lot going on in this issue.  This has been a fun story line.  Professor Zoom is such an interesting character as everyone thinks he's a speedster but he's really controlling time.  It's going to be interesting to see how the Flash is going to do against Zoom.  Also, what will Zoom do after what happened to his villainous group?

I'm of the understanding that the art portion of the Flash team will be leaving the title soon.  That's unfortunate as I feel this is one of the best teams around.  I'm not overly fond of the tweaks made to the Flash's costume, but everything else is amazing.  The flow of each page, detail in the right places and I don't know where you'll find colors used much better.  Wherever Booth, Rapmund and Dalhouse go, I'm sure I'll be hopping onto that title as well.  If what I've heard is true, seeing this team working on underwater adventures could be some of the most incredible visuals of 2016.

As far as the writing team, I have no news as to whether staying or going.  Again, I can see myself checking out whatever Venditti and Jensen write.  It has been an extraordinary pleasure to read from this super team of writers and artists.
