Supernatural: Season 12 Episode 3 “The Foundry” Review

Supernatural: Season 12 Episode 3 “The Foundry”

Director: Robert Singer

Writer: Robert Berens

Staring: Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins, Mark Sheppard, Ruth Connell, Samantha Smith, Rick Springfield

Synopsis: Dean, Castiel and Mary  have a lead on Sam and set out to rescue hime. Dean is uncomfortable putting Mary in danger, but she insists on going. Meanwhile, Crowley is tipped off that Lucifer has take over the body of rock star Vince Vicente.

My Thoughts: Look at that, it’s the Supernatural we all fell in love with! This episode made it so easy to feel like we were watching an episode from one of the earlier seasons. The only difference now is Mary is the (well sorta) new hunter joining the boys on a hunt, rather than the boys being new and following in their fathers footsteps. Plus, I love episodes with ghosts! While they aren’t the craziest of episodes, there is always something a little different about each one.

Mary reminds me a lot of Jo from a couple seasons ago, just older and you know motherly.  She is the one that found the case, convinced Sam and Dean to go on the hunt and does some soul searching while she is there. The boys get caught up in what they believe that they miss some of the clues, but Mary discovers that something does not fit with what the boys are focusing on. Even though she sorta falls under the damsel in distress, it’s her discovery that leads Sam and Dean to destroying the ghost that is killing people. One of the best parts of the main fight is when Mary is possessed and you see Dean and Sam struggle with that situation, very entertaining.

The Winchesters aren’t the only ones that are busy though, Crowley and Castiel are working together, oddly enough, to find Lucifer. Yes, that’s right, Crowley and Cass are on a hunt of their own. While I find it weird that Dean would just let Cass leave on his own to hunt down the likes of Lucifer, it is a fun dynamic to see these two work together. I don’t want it to happen for a whole season, but every once in a while is nice.  Plus, we can’t leave out Rowena. I mean she did handle Lucifer.  It’s a temporary fix, but it got the job done for now. Sadly, I wont be surprised if Lucifer kills her here pretty soon.

Over all, the episodes so far have me thinking Mary has to feel so out of place. I didn’t expect her to separate from the boys this early, but I am happy that some of the plot points that have been bothering me were finally vocalized. It is so easy for all of us fans to look at everything from the boy’s point of view because that is what we have been doing for the last 11 years, but look at this from Mary’s side. She was brought back to life with her husband gone, her sons fully grown into men and a world that has changed so much in the time she has been gone that it is a completely different world. While I didn’t expect her to up and leave the boys so soon in the season we all know she will be back. This gives writers a chance to focus on Sam and Deans struggle of their Mother being back without us having to dwell on every thing Mary has to go through to catch up with modern times as well. I’m still not sure where the season is going so hopefully a season arc will reveal itself here soon.

Also, I love episodes directed by Robert Singer. I see his name in the credits and I just smile. He has a few episodes that he has directed that have become some of my favorites. Just the same, Robert Berens as written a few of my favorite episodes as well. So basically, more Robert Singer and Robert Berens please!

Supernatural Review: We Happy Few

Supernatural: We Happy Few

Director: John Badham

Writer: Robert Berens

Staring: Jared padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins, Mark Sheppard, Ruth Connell, Emily Swallow, Rob Benedict

Thank you Robert Berens and John Badham! Thank you for this episode filled with awkward family bonding and “did that really just happen” moments. Honestly, I could watch Misha Collins and Rob Benedict bicker all day long. The back and forth between Lucifer and God was better than I could have asked for and some. Robert Berens did an amazing job writing a scene that seems unfathomable and then making it relatable for everyone. Who hasn’t had a moment where they felt betrayed by their parent and then want nothing more than a heartfelt apology, just to hear those two little words, I’m sorry.

As if getting Lucifer and God on the same page wasn’t hard enough, the gang some how convinces the angels, the demons and Rowena with a few witches to come together to fight the darkness. Honestly, for a good moment there it looks like it’s going to work. For a brief second it looks like things, for once, are going to go in favor of the boys. The saying "hell hath no fury like a woman scorned" seriously holds up at the end of this fight. That moment just before the last commercial break where you seriously think that Amara had indeed killed God was one of the most shocking moments in the whole series of Supernatural. Just the concept of witnessing God die and then the repercussions of living in a world with out a God. It is mind-boggling. While that would have been a great ending point of the episode, waiting a whole week to find out God actually did not die yet would have been a buzz kill for the start of next week’s episode. Good choice to reveal that now rather than later.

As always I love the scenes with Rowena and Fergus… um I mean Crowely. I feel like they will come to an end some day, so getting more of those in always makes me happy.  I’m really hoping that with how things played out with Lucifer, Castiel is back and hopefully the wonderful Mark Pellegrino will some day make another appearance on the show. Misha Collins did well as Lucifer, but I want Cas back and Pellegrino as Lucifer just puts a smile on my face. If that can’t happen though, then Lucifer you get right back in there with Cas, Misha can carry those reigns.

Supernatural Reviews: Don’t Call Me Shurley & All in the Family

Supernatural: Don’t Call Me Shurley & All in the Family

Director: Don’t Call Me Shurley – Robert Singer
All in the Family – Thomas Wright

Writer: Don’t Call Me Shurley – Robbie Thompson
All in the Family – Brad Buckner, Eugenie Ross-Leming

Starring: Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Curtis Armstrong, Rob Benedict, Misha Collins, Emily Swallow

Doing things a little different this week, I didn’t get to watch Don’t Call Me Shurley until after I watched this week’s All in the Family. The big reveal finally happened though, during Don’t Call Me Shurley. After seasons of waiting and speculating who God would be, we come to find out Chuck is and has always been God, but please do continue to call him Chuck. Even though it has been speculated for a while now that it was possible Chuck would end up being the big man, it is nice to finally know for sure. As if being true to form, God is the main focus in both episodes, looks like the boys have to take a back seat and it works.

I’m going to focus  on Don’t Call Me Shurley first. While not your typical Supernatural episode, this one hit you right in the feels. The best parts of this episode happen to be between Metatron and Chuck. Sure there was importance to what Sam and Dean were doing, but the chemistry and tension between Chuck and Metatron was just too juicy to be ignored. Thank god so much time was given to them for this episode. (Pun intended) Sure most of it was fun and light hearted, but at the right times suddenly the tension would rise and you remember, “oh crap that’s God.” Kudos to both men for a great performance, especially for Curtis Armstrong for making Metatron seem like a likable character again. Possibly one of my favorite moments in this episode is when Chuck talks about music. I agree music probably is humanities greatest creation. Music is magic.

Like I said though, Sam and Dean’s part of the episode was important too. With an entire town falling victim to Amara’s toxic fog, Sam and Dean are forced to try to find a way to save a few people in the local Sherriff’s office.  Which they fail at miserably, even Sam falls victim to the fog. It has been made pretty obvious through out this season that Amara is a big time player, this episode proved even more of how far she can go. Plus, when Dean is left as the only one not affected by fog, it suddenly shows what Dean’s future could look like. Isolation, even if for only a moment, is a truly scary thing as it leads to Dean praying for help. After an awkward moment though, Dean prayers are answered, God saves the town.

All honesty though, the best parts really are between Chuck and Metatron. Also the choice of song to have Chuck sing “Fare Thee Well” at the end speaks volumes.  There is a possibility of foreshadowing to it. Either way Rob Benedict and Curtis Armstrong stole the show. For once Metatron is relatable for the audience in all the right ways, also this was a great way to introduce the audience to Chuck as God even if he does seem the same as before, he is so much more now.

Now for All in the Family, this was probably the best way they could start this episode. The reaction from Sam and Dean are so on point it’s priceless. You’re right Dean, “Holy crap!” Side note, yay! Kevin Tran! Now back to where I was before. Sam and Dean’s reactions were perfect. Sam tries so hard to stay calm and collected and then quickly turns into a babbling idiot, it’s so cute. Dean though, is a little more hesitant. Dean questions where has God been through all of the horrible events this earth has seen over time, that people have prayed to him, built churches for him and fought wars in his name. Chuck’s response is even better. This scene is probably one of my favorite scenes in the whole series, it is so easy to relate too, both sides are covered between both brothers. It would have been so easy to make this scene seem cheesy or unimportant, but the significance of it is so clear and personal.

The next scene is probably the most important scene of this season for Amara. Lucifer is looking much worse for wear thanks the Amara torturing him while trying to get him to reach out to God for his help. Lucifer doesn’t give in though. Lucifer points out that God created everything, but all Amara has ever wanted is nothing. Lucifer even admits that there is a chance the Amara could beat God, but at the same time admits that she will never be him. It was a short scene but it was unique in how it made Amara seem strong and then point out a weakness all at the same time.

A lot more happens in this episode, it is jam packed leading up to the last two episodes of the season. We are introduced to Donatello Redfield, who becomes the new profit. While Dean distracts Amara, the gang is able to go in and rescue Lucifer, but Metatron stays behind to give them a little more time. Which is when Amara catches on and she is pissed. God is able to get them out of her grasp and bring them to the safety. There is tension instantly between Lucifer and Chuck, but Chuck cures Lucifer of his wounds caused at the hands of Amara.

I find it amusing that even God’s Sister can’t stop fan girling over Dean. Looks like the SPN Family has a new member. The situation just makes me giggle. I want to destroy everything, except I want to make you apart of me. We will have to see how this plays out. Mostly though, I am looking forward to seeing more interactions between Chuck and Lucifer. I see some biblical family fighting in our near future!

Supernatural Review: The Chitters

Supernatural Review: The Chitters

Director: Eduardo Sanchez

Writer: Nancy Won

Staring: Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Lee Rumohr, Hugo Ateo, Kandyse McClure, April Telek

Synopsys: Sam and Dean are visiting a small town in Colorado where people are mysteriously disappearing every 27 years. While they are investigating, the boys encounter a pair of hunters seeking revenge on the monster causing the disapperances.

Finally back from the short hiatus and we have a monster of the week type episode. For all of you long time fans this episode had a Wendigo feel to it, more of a scary movie vibe if you will. The opening of the show is two boys, Matty and Jessy, heading out to go fishing when suddenly Matty is taken by some weird naked monster.  This looks like a job for those Winchester boys and thankfully it didn’t take a lot of convincing.

It’s been a while since we have seen the boys come up against a monster they know nothing about. Luckily for Sam and Dean, they run into two other hunters that seem to know what they are dealing with, one of them has some experience with these monsters. Jessy, who is now grown up, is out for revenge for his brother.  It’s refreshing to see Sam and Dean split up and work with other hunters, it’s not a balance we don’t get to see much of in the show. Sam and Jessy go to ask the former sheriff questions while Dean and Cesar look for where ever these monsters are hiding out in the woods.

The two sets of guys going of in separate directions was a creative way to tell the story faster. Rather than having to do all the research and then go hunt, we are able to see the hunting done by Dean and Cesar while Same and Jessy get answers for what had happened in the past. Both sets of guys have their on struggles to overcome, but I really enjoyed the separation. It was a little storybook in the end how it perfectly came together for everyone to end up meeting and then going back into finish the job, but its smile worthy.

I really like the idea that Sam and Dean considering to bring in a hunter or two to help with the Darkness. Fresh eyes and extra muscle probably would be good for this big battle coming up, but it shows how much Dean has grown as a person in this show when he tells them they don’t need help. Its nice to see Sam and Dean agree that when two hunters make it to the finish line you don’t mess with it.

Final thoughts: Kudos to Eduardo Sanchez on his Supernatural directorial debut on the show. This episode had a horror movie vibe to it that hasn’t been so apparent on the show for a while. Wither a lot of fans noticed it or not, I’m sure it was appreciated. After all, that is something that got a lot of fans into it the show to beginning with. I don't know who came up with Dean calling the monsters "Junkless" but that was priceless. There is also some supporting cast that I really enjoyed in this episode. Lee Rumohr and Hugo Ateo did a wonderful job portraying a gay couple with out it looking over the top or cheesy, which sadly happens a lot on TV and in movies, it could have really taken away from the episode, the subtlety spoke volumes. I believe a big part of that is the writing from Nancy Won, thank you. Also, April Telek played the other character that I loved in this episode. Etta Day making a pass at Sam and Dean reacting to it was hilarious. I don’t know what it is, but I love it when one of the boys is put in an awkward situation like this and the other is just sitting there watching and letting it happen. There are only 4 episode left in this season so buckle up everyone its gonna get bumpy. YAY!
