Drawn Out - Post-It Note Sketching

Even if I'm not at my computer doing digital artwork or at my drawing table with comic book art boards I still find myself sketching.  I'll draw a couple lines, then draw some shapes and before you know it; Batman is on the page.

I have some Post-It notes at my desk and sometimes I get to work a little early or I may be on hold on the phone a long time so I just start sketching.  I decided to share some of those sketches of what I do with a Post-It note and a Uni-Ball Signa 0.7mm pen.  

I drew up my version of the Reverse Flash(or is it Professor Zoom?).  This one I also included coloring with a hi-liter pen from Office Max.  

Next up is Superman.  For some reason I find myself having more difficulty drawing the Man of Steel more than any other hero.  I am finding that less is more when it comes to details in the face.

I've always liked the look of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.  They're all a ton of fun to draw and definitely a go to for me.

Blasto the Clown is from the warped minds here at Abnormal Entertainment.  Based on a character that was supposed to appear in a fart fetish video, Blasto has taken on a life of his own in the world of digital comics.  An unlikely hero, Blasto is great to draw, no matter what mood I'm in.

Drawn Out: Logo

The logo for this blog is not just about the words, but also about the background art.  The art is a bunch of sketches of characters that I have drawn in the past and also whatever came to mind.  The first picture is the logo that I like.  Take a look at the other pictures as these are the steps I took in making the logo.

The first picture depicts the loose pencils to lay out everything.  I say "pencils" but all of the artwork was completed digitally.  I like using blue for pencils and then bringing down the opacity before inking.  For those not knowing what that is, opacity is how dark the lines are.  I lower the opacity before I go over in black so it isn't as distracting.  

Here is the black and white version before adding the lettering. I teased this on Instagram and my personal Facebook page.  The overall reaction was pretty positive.

I played with coloring the logo but ultimately decided to go black and white.  I thought colors that overlapped and went outside the designated lines might be a cool look but in the end felt it was distracting from the words "Drawn Out."

As stated earlier this logo was made digitally.  It was drawn using a Wacom Intuos Tablet using the program, Manga Studio 5.  The lettering for the logo was made using Comic Life 2.

Drawn Out: Introduction to the New Artwork Blogs

A question was posed by Handsome J. on the Maskerpiece Theatre Fan Page on Facebook about what everyone would like to see from our blogs.  We were met with some great suggestions including more artwork.  As a group we should have figured that to be the case as the original comic book, "Twisted Magic," is one of our most popular postings.  

With all this being typed, I plan to post more of my drawings on here. 

I had never drawn Chewbacca(at least to memory I hadn't), and a really good friend commissioned me to draw the Wookie for her Star Wars loving sister.  I decided to do a practice run digitally using my Wacom tablet and Manga Studio 5 software. This was my first attempt.  Chewie has become much improved the works that followed this one.  They were not done digitally and have yet to be scanned.  

I was doing a lot of drawing for a series I am working on but at the end of the day I wanted to draw something fun.  Rancid is my favorite band and I wanted to draw someone enjoying the music.  The skulls were added because the lead singer Tim Armstrong  includes skulls in much of his amazing artwork.  This picture and the next one were also drawn with a Wacom tablet and using Manga Studio 5 as the software.

Kevin Moyers and I are working on a comic book series called Blasto the Clown.  We have a post of the first book here in the Maskerpiece Theatre blogs and also on YouTube, complete with voices and sound effects.  I sketched this one before work one day.  There is a bit of a tease of a future character sneaking his tentacle over the bathroom stall.

Original Comic Book: Blasto the Clown - Issue 1 - Blasto Begins

Blasto the Clown is a book from the mind of Kevin Moyers by way of very odd circumstances.

Blasto was a character conceived for another friend, Jeff, to play in real life.  He was to be a clown for a fart fetish video.  Page two was basically shout out to the origin.  The video never happened but the creative, or twisted rather, minds of Abnormal Entertainment had other plans for a face painted hero.

One night, during a recording of Maskerpiece Theatre, Kevin Moyers said to me he had the perfect project to work on with me.  He said it was about a farting clown named Blasto and that was all I needed to hear.  We met up one day and after a few(okay, many) beers and after three quarters of the day wasted, we came up with the first issue of Blasto the Clown.  Kevin already had the origin in mind, we just needed a good way to showcase his newly found "power."

This was a great project for me to immerse myself in.  I have always enjoyed drawing comic books and this gave me an outlet.  I actually left my full time job to work on this, and other projects.  We were able to unveil Blasto at Phoenix ComiCon as a short film, you know, because we added voices and sound effects to it.  The pages were done in pencil and ink with the colors added digitally.  The cover, an homage to Marvel's Amazing Fantasy #15, was all done digitally.
