Comic Book Review: Superman #22 - DC Comics (2017)

Lois Lane is searching for her husband Clark Kent and their son Jon.  The boys were out with Damian Wayne(Robin) looking for Batman.  Lois finds out there is much more to her missing family and friends as "Black Dawn" continues.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the Rebirth run on Superman thus far.  The "Black Dawn" story line had the seeds planted many issues ago and I feel that this is something that really sets DC Comics apart from many other comic book companies.  There is a plan in place and the stories have been wonderful because of it.  This isn't to say that you need to read all 21 issues leading up to this(plus an Annual and some cross-overs with Action Comics).  If you did read them, it's an added bonus.

The "Black Dawn" stories read a lot like a horror story.  We are also given these stories from multiple perspectives.  The majority of this comic book is from Lois' perspective as she uses her journalistic prowess to find Clark, Jon, Damian and Bruce.  Because this is Lois, we get to see her find much more than she had originally bargained for.  We also are treated to how tough she can be as she takes on assailants and gets to drive the Batmobile.  Superman is the person whose perspective is given to the readers.  There is a revelation at the end of this book that left me clamoring for more.

Doug Mahnke is one of my favorite artists and I am always happy to see his name on the cover.  Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason have been putting together incredible stories and they are that much better when Mahnke is in charge of the art.  The inks were nice in this comic as the use of black in some of the more eerie panels was beautiful.  The visuals are spectacular and Wil Quintana's colors add to the spooky feeling.

Comic Book Review: Trinity #1 - DC Comics (2016)

"Better Together: Part One - Family Dinner"

Lois Lane invites Batman and Wonder Woman over for dinner.  This is a surprise to Superman.

For those that may not know, Superman of the current DC Universe has died.  The Superman from the previous DC Universe had been in hiding, coming out every now and then to secretly save the day.  Batman and Wonder Woman want to know more about the Clark Kent that is now in their universe and what he truly stands for.  I feel that this book will be excellent in the exploratory nature of finding out how well the Trinity works together.

Francis Manapul is doing it all for this series.  Not only is he writing an excellent story, he is providing incredible artwork.  The artwork doesn't stop at pencils and inks as he is also in charge of colors.  Manapul has his own style and it definitely works for this series.  Trinity is a great looking book and is worth the $2.99 cover price.

The introductory issue does not have anything Earth shattering happen in it which is good.  I wanted to see the interaction of the characters.  Superman tells a funny story about Batman and Robin from his "world" which of course does not amuse Bruce Wayne.  There is also interaction between Lois and Wonder Woman which is cool since the Amazon had a relationship with the now deceased version of Superman.

If you're a fan of these three heroes, go out and pick up this book.  I don't think you will be disappointed.

Comic Book Review: Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #4 - DC Comics (2016)

"Sinestro's Law Part 4: The Fear Engine"

Sinestro contines to fuel his Fear Engine as he awaits the arrival of Sinestro Corps' latest prisoner: Hal Jordan.  Sinestro is in for a surprise as there is a captured Green Lantern but not who he thinks.  Hal Jordan was redirected and taken by someone else while on planet Moga, John Stewart must make a decision as to what he should do next.

I am extremely glad I started reading this series.  Robert Venditti is crafting an other-worldly story happening across the universe with some of the most incredible heroes and villains in the DC Universe.  Hal Jordan bringing the Green Lantern Corps together and Sinestro coming back into power and looking to bring his version of order to the universe.  We are only 4 issues in(5 including the Rebirth Issue) and it feels like the best is yet to come.  This is also a comic book to read.  I Enjoy that there are lengthy conversations being had.  I feel like dialogue within comic books is a fading art.

Ethan Van Sciver is an extraordinary artist.  This series is worth picking up for the art alone.  Luckily the story is excellent as well.  The colors look amazing as well.  The use of light and the fact that it looks like it glows is a remarkable feat by colorist Jason Wright.

Comic Book Review: Supergirl #1 - DC Comics (2016)

"Reign of the Cyborg Supermen"

The first issue of Supergirl shows her presently as Kara Danvers, a a struggling junior in high school.  The story also shows flashbacks of Supergirl as Kara Zor-El, an excellent scientific mind in school on Krypton.  Kara Danvers is also having difficulty being a superhero as well, working with the Department of Extranormal Affairs.  She will turn to the only family she has to bring some normalcy to her eclectic life.

This is a nice issue to introduce someone into the Supergirl universe.  I'm not as "in the know" with Superman's cousin as others may be, but I enjoyed this issue.  The reader is shown Supergirl now and how things were on Krypton.  Supergirl's Earth parents are also in this book and you can see it is tough for them as well and you understand their dynamic.  I'm interested to see if this is explored further and how in depth that portion of the story will go.

I like that Supergirl is in high school.  I've found that to be a great way to garner interest within the story.  Somehow we, as readers, are okay with a superhero able to just leave work whenever to save the world(being a billionaire helps in this regard).  School seems to be different though.  The interactions with classmates are usually as awkward as I seem to remember in real life.  Thankfully the writer Steven Orlando didn't try to come up with some sort of younger generation slang or dated references when having the high school kids talking.  There are other books that force feed that to the audience(I've reviewed them and it can be difficult to get over).

If you are looking for a new book to get into or maybe have a young teen who you think might get into comic books, check out Supergirl.  It's fun and there is enough going on with other characters to keep this book interesting.  It's different from the TV show on CBS/CW but it's a good read.

Comic Book Review: Superman #6 - DC Comics (2016)

"Son of Superman"

Superman along with his wife Lois and son Jon are on the moon inside of one of Batman's secret bases taking on the Eradicator.  The Eradicator feels Superman has tainted the Kryptonian bloodline by having a half human son in Jon.  It's up to Big Blue to stop the Eradicator from killing his only son.

These are the Superman stories we will go back and truly treasure.  The most powerful superhero around is dealing with the one thing that make any man weak: their children.  Superman is doing everything he can to raise Jon to be a good person but also knows that the kid is starting to gain superpowers.  With that, Superman must show him how to use his powers responsibly.  Tomasi and Gleason are doing this amidst action and great heart to heart conversations.

The art fits what is going on in this story.  Superman is a symbol of heroism and the poses within the book definitely portray him that way.  It's an absolute pleasure to read this book.

I was a bit skeptical when it came to this series.  Superman is so powerful that I'm sure it must be a daunting task to come up with something interesting.  The crew on this book are doing a masterful job and I look forward to reading the next issue.

Comic Book Review: Justice League #4 - DC Comics (2016)

The world is in turmoil.  Attacks from another world and earthquakes generated by ancient machines under the Earth's surface have made things difficult for the Justice League.  A purge is happening and it's up to our heroes to find out who is behind everything and why.

Bryan Hitch has a lot going on in this series and I feel like he is doing a wonderful job with it.  There are a lot of heroes to juggle and it's great to see that each one seems to have their own part.  Some seem minor now but I have a feeling what Aquaman is hearing could be as impactful as the under the surface mission Superman is currently on.

Justice League is a good series for those of you who want to follow one story line in the DC Universe.  There really are no ties to the heroes' other books when it comes to Justice League.  The group is entirely too powerful to keep together if it's not a worldwide threat so attempting to cross over into the individual books would be near impossible without some sort of seasonal event.

Justice League is only a handful of issues in so check your local comic shops to see if you can get the previous issues(even 2nd printings).  It's a fun series and I look forward to each upcoming issue.

Comic Book Review: Batman #6 - DC Comics (2016)

"I Am Gotham" - Epilogue

Gotham Girl is still feeling the effects from Psycho Pirate and that, being coupled with the loss of her brother Gotham, has her in a downward spiral.  Gotham Girl is lost in her own head, fighting crime and talking to her now deceased brother out loud everywhere she goes.  The other problem with Gotham girl fighting crim is thee fact that every time she uses her powers, her lifespan is shortened.  Duke is concerned and expresses these feelings to Batman.  Batman must now figure out what to do to bring some normalcy to Gotham Girl's life.

I'm a huge fan of what Tom King has done thus far with this Batman series.  This issue was interesting due to Batman had to be much more psychological.  Not psychological in the traditional detective way, but in a way of dealing with someone who has been impacted  emotionally to the point of going mad.  The interactions were great and there will be more in upcoming issues I'm sure.

Ivan Reis has quickly become one of my favorite artists.  I'm always happy to see his name on the cover as I know the artwork will be stellar.  I like when great artists get to work on great books and I hope to see him on a title on a regular basis.

With this story ending, it's time for some new things in the Batman series.  Don't wait for the trade paperback if you haven't been following since issue one, go out and start following this series.  Issue #7 will actually cross over with Nightwing #5(another good series).  There's going to be monsters in it, pick 'em up!

Comic Book Review: Nightwing #4 - DC Comics (2016)

"Better Than Batman" Part 4

Nightwing continues his personal mission to take down the Parliament of Owls.  Nightwing and Raptor obtain a copy of the Book of Wisdom and now are on their way to get the coins to decipher the book.  Nightwing has been playing the "long game" with Raptor and is having a tough time with the morality of his undercover choices.

I have absolutely been enjoying this series.  Tim Seeley is crafting a Nightwing story that truly tests the hero's moral limits.  There are people suffering at the hands of the Owls and Nightwing has constantly struggled with saving a few or waiting to save many. Nightwing is also struggling as he has befriended a man called Raptor, an admitted outlaw but he seems to be a good person(or is he?).

I also enjoy Nightwing's interactions with those in the Batman world.  Whether it be Bruce Wayne or Damian Wayne, Nightwing proves to be an individual and makes him a compelling character in the comic book universe.

Javier Fernandez is a remarkable artist and is doing great work on this title.  Nightwing is an acrobat and the poses are fantastic.  If I had a complaint about the look of this book, it's very minor.  I don't like the bird on the costume.  I prefer the larger bird personally.

I highly recommend picking up this series.  If you're having difficulty finding the first couple issues, don't worry.  It looks like issue #5 will start a new story line and tie in with Batman #7.

Chris Sotomayor's colors look wonderful as well.  The blood stains on Turkeyhead(not really his name...I don't think) show his incredible talent.

Titans Rebirth - Comic Book Review

The DC Rebirth saga continues with Titans and Wally West is trying to solve the mystery that is plaguing the entire DC universe. So let's dive in and take a look at "Titans Rebirth" in this comic book review...

The issue starts off with Wally realizing he's gonna need the help of his old team, the Titans. The only problem is that the team doesn't remember him & assumes he's an intruder. A sudden curious occurrence helps Wally restore fragments of memory to his friends but it still doesn't answer the bigger question affecting the DC Universe but the team realizes they need to get ready.

Overall, the story was pretty simple. The dialogue was also pretty minimal however it was appropriate. There's a nice explanation regarding Wallys absence & what he's been witnessing while gone. In 1 issue we also get a clear sense of the importance his friends have in his life. These aren't just super hero's but friends, dare I say, family to Wally. The struggle he faces during this issue of trying to reason with them while they attack him was fun to read. 

The artwork in this issue was visually delightful. There is some dark room fight sequences, then bright colored rooms with hugs, the ocean landscaping & more. This issue really travels around and it all looks vibrant and well drawn. The fight sequences looked pretty cool as well as we are treated to the different skill sets of the heros attacking Wally & his reactions. Overall, the story looks great and was a treat for my eyes. 

I'd recommend this series for the reasons listed above as well as this appears to be the glue that connects all the other stories together. I could be wrong. I've only read this first issue but the feeling I got was that the writers are using this story to tie all the mystery up that is looming over the DC universe right now. It's a quick read but it looks great. Go visit your local comic book store and pick this issue up! Oh, tell them Maskerpiece Theatre sent you.

Comic Book Review: Aquaman Rebirth #1 - DC Comics (2016)

An Atlantean terrorist group known as the Deluge threatens to attack the surface world.  Aquaman has made stopping the Deluge his number one priority.  All the while, someone is keeping a watchful eye on Aquaman.

Aquaman Rebirth #1 is an excellent introduction to a person who may or may not be interested in reading an Aquaman comic book.  Dan Abnett cleverly tells this tale while also including surface world reports that illustrate the fun that is poked at the ruler of Atlantis.  I enjoy the fact that Aquaman is portrayed as a misunderstood in not only the surface world, but also in Atlantis.  Abnett brings the understanding that Aquaman is doing everything he can for Atlantis/surface dweller relations.

The art looks great as well.  There are quite a few people working on this book and they all deserve the credit.  There are people and beastly sea creatures that look absolutely wonderful.

Superman Rebirth - Comic Book Review

If you read the DC Rebirth issue you know that each character is getting a new story with a new timeline and curious developments are taking place. So let's dive in and take a look at my thoughts on "Superman Rebirth" issue 1...

Superman is dead and there's more going on at his burial site than just his remains resting in peace. Another Superman has decided that he's going to help Superman resurrect himself as he once did and the story plays on from there. This issue is exposition city! There's so much world building in this comic that even if you haven't read Superman before this, it won't matter. Everything, mostly, is explained and it's written so well. Again, we are treated to nonstop dialogue because they are catching everyone up. It's articulate and the two main characters read uniquely. 

The art in this issue is explosive at times and at other times very natural. Since the basis of this issue is exposition, there isn't much action. It's two people in different rooms talking but if you're paying attention you'll notice how much character is involved in the design of the faces as they talk. Also, the different locations do not look like each other. Some are dark and covered in shadow while another is bright with varied shades of blue. Overall, the art was subtle but enjoyable.

I'm not sure whether I enjoyed this or Action Comics more but this was a good read if you're a superman fan or curious about becoming one. This isn't an exciting first issue but I'm inclined to believe with all the design they are putting into this world the payoff will be there once we're all caught up. If you're gonna grab this issue do so at a local comic book shop and tell them Maskerpiece Theatre sent you. 

Comic Book Review: Wonder Woman Rebirth #1 - DC Comics (2016)

Wonder Woman reflects on her life as she figures out where she fits into the world.

Greg Rucka takes us into the mind of Wonder Woman.  The way she is viewed by the world and her perception of those views are explored as we are treated with an origin story that in no way feels forced.  If a person was hoping to get into a comic book with a strong female lead character, this would be a nice starting point.  I almost don't feel like I need to throw in the "strong female lead" character.  Wonder Woman is a great character regardless and if you want to read about a hero with god-like powers, pick this one up.

The artistic duties are shared within this book and all of it looks great.  I like that, if you're having more than one person doing pencils, you have a good separation point.  The back story is told and when Wonder Woman is ready for her other-worldly journey, the change in artists happen.  The ook looks great and reflects the excellent story written by Greg Rucka.

Comic Book Review: The Flash Rebirth #1 - DC Comics (2016)

"...Doomed To Repeat It..."

The Flash finds Wally West from an alternate reality and is on a quest to figure out what is going on with the visions he is having.  This book runs parallel with the DC Rebirth comic book.

The Flash Rebirth #1 is an absolutely fantastic read.  If you have been reading The Flash from the the previous "New 52" line, this is a continuation.  This book is also for those who hearken to DC's past story lines.  The Flash also appears to be the comic book to follow to see what truly caused the "New 52" and who appears to be "watching" them.  There is also a great team up in this book and that should keep readers happy.

The art is fun and vibrant.  I enjoyed the scenes of the Flash and Wally running and all of the interactions.  The Flash Rebirth #1 was incredibly enjoyable.

Green Lanterns Rebirth - Review

Having been a fan of Hal Jordons many many years ago I decided to get back with the Green Lantern series now that DC has revamped things, as it were. I didn't know the new Lanterns and was pleasantly surprised at the back story that was given in this issue. There's plenty of dialogue in this issue which I'm very much a fan of, assuming it's quality conversation & not wasteful jibberish. This issue also sets up a glimpse into how the series could play out. 

I enjoyed the brief battle sequence and the reveals had me shaking my head in agreement and saying "yessssss" as I read this issue. I'm looking forward to seeing how the story plays out. There's a few possibilities and they all seem entertaining. Plus there's a little mystery as well that peaked my interest but you'll have to pick this issue up to read about it. From the very beginning to the very end we aren't sure what will happen but we know things are going to happen and those things should be very exciting!

Batman Rebirth - Review

Batman Rebirth starts off with Batman engaged in battle with Calendar Man. He's fighting to stop city destroying spores from being released and causing mass catastrophe. The action looks clean and it also has a somewhat gritty feel to it. I enjoyed the overall look of the comic and I wasn't sure to expect but it was enjoyable.

The story read too quickly. I started and finished reading this issue in less than 5 minutes. I prefer more dialogue and exposition because I feel I'm getting my money's worth. So that would be my only critique on this issue. What story is there is enjoyable. Batman has taken on a new partner, sidekick, we aren't sure but we know whatever the role is Batman says it will be something different. Plus there's some pretty gnarly art work towards the end. Here's a sneak peak. Don't say we never did anything for you.
