Binge Watcher Review: The Good Place "Season One"

Synopsis: 

When rogue shopping carts strike and kill Eleanor Shellstrop, she is surprised to find herself in the “good” area of the afterlife. She quickly realizes she has been mistaken for someone else when her wise, newfound mentor tells her she earned her place by helping get innocent people off death row. She decides that she wants to shed her old foul-mouthed and hard-dirking ways and find a way to embrace the good person within— at least when she isn’t considering finding a way to return to her mundane existence back on Earth.

Final Thoughts:

After finishing episode one, my first thoughts were this was a stupid show and concept. However, somehow I had a weird urge to continue watching. I am so glad I continued and was not disappointed. Kristen Bell has an amazing ability to turn nonsense into humor and the addition of Ted Danson was amazing.

The show itself centers around Eleanor, a women who just lived a horrible life while on earth. The flashbacks throughout each episode are amazing and really helps sell the difficult that Eleanor has to being a good person. Through each episode of the season Eleanor works to better herself with the help of her not so “Soul Mate” Chidi all the while trying hide the fact that she truely doesn’t belong in the good place.

If you are looking for a fun show that will not make you think to hard than “The Good Place” is for you. Plus the season finale has a twist you won’t see coming. So while many shows are still on Hiatus and you are stuck watching reruns or even worse reality TV, just log on to your Hulu account and begin your binge watching adventure, cause in the end you’ll find yourself in a good place.

Binge Watcher Review: Countdown (2016)

Countdown (2016)

Synopsis:

When a madman kidnaps a young boy and rigs him with explosives, Ray defies his captain and takes matters into his own hands. Now he must beat the clock and save the innocent child.

Review:

Before moving into the review I have to state that I am a big supporter of “B Movie” action films and more specifically have found the majority of WWE Studio films enjoyable. Are they great….no. However, they have found their niche in the movie industry. Countdown was not on of these films, I don’t even know where to start with this movie but I will try.

The film starts promising enough, Ray being played by WWE Superstar Dolph Ziggler and Detective Kendricks enter what looks to be cargo yard to perform a undercover operation and this is where the movie comes apart. As soon as we are introduced to Rays sergeant, WWE Superstar Kane, the movie starts to unravel before our eyes. Ray is suspended due to his performance in the field which allows us to be introduced to the female lead, OPA officer Julia Baker, played by Katharine Isabelle. Her performance was so awful in the first scene I wouldn’t have blamed anyone for turning off the TV. Through out the movie she is puffin on and inhaler….Maybe due to asthma or maybe due to an addiction but you don’t know why cause it actually plays no part in the film and is never touched apon.

The next 15 mins of the films dives into what is supposed to be the main plot of the movie, a madman who has been sending Ray demands for 2 mil in cash for the last year has finally upped his game and kidnaps a kid……What the fuck, what police department doesn’t investigate ransom demands for an entire year? However, lets suspend disbelief for the moment and believe this is possible. The rest of those 15 mins show ray running around a WWE event (Im guessing due to financial restraints, on the plus side you get to see the back of The Rock in one scene for about two seconds) chasing the madman because this is where the ransom dropped happened. The chase ends with villain being killed leaving a little kid somewhere in town strapped with explosives and its now a race against the clock to save the child.

The rest of the film plays out as expected and shows Ray running around town, causing trouble to get information on the whereabouts of the boy while being chased by the man they arrested at the beginning of the film during the undercover operations for some reason. 

This was a horrible film, it was just filled with horrible acting, plot holes and in all honesty no plot direction. Ray and Julia spend time asking around town in order to locate this child, only there was no actually evidence that they should be questioning all these individuals other than they are all Russian. We had to be given a new villain cause they killed the one that cause all of the issue within the first 20 mins. And while Dorph Ziggler was passible as an actor, Kane was just horrible and needs to put his mask back on.

As for the writers of this film, Richard Wenk (16 blocks, The Magnificent 7) and Michael Finch (The November Man, Hitman: Agent 47) this was a horrible script for two men that have given us solid films in the past. My suggestion…..Pass on this movie, let my suffering be enough.

The Binge Watcher Review: The Double (2011)

The Double (2011)

Starring:

Richard Gere, Topher Grace, Martin Sheen, Tamer Hassan, Stephan Moyer, Chris Marquette, Odette Annable, Stana Katic, Yuri Sardarov

Synopsis:

A Retired CIA operative is paired with a young FBI agent to unravel the mystery of a senator’s murder, with all signs pointing to a Soviet assassin.

The Good:

With the movie falling into the suspense genre it makes perfect sense to cast an actor with Richard Gere’s abilities and he doesn’t disappoint. However the surprise is Topher Grace doing an adequate job opposite of Gere.

The Bad:

So much for the suspense, the movie gives away most of the plot within 30 mins of the movie. After the preverbal shoe had drop the rest of the film goes through the motions until about ten min left in the movie.

Final Thoughts:

Within 30 min of the film we know almost everything we will need to know, the rest of the film is dedicated to the chase with Grace’s character putting together the puzzle piece long after the audience figured out the plot. The twist doesn’t come until the end when we learn that Grace’s character is a double agent sent to kill Gere. In the end the twist was far to late to really have the necessary impact it was met to have.

Was “The Double” a good movie? Yes. But in many ways was never a good Suspense movie. Michael Brandt and Derek Haas wrote the story, they used the “Bad Guys is ultimately good” plot which was much more successful in there previous co-writing exploits 3:10 to Yuma.

This was a good movie to rent, but I would never spend any money to buy it. it passed the time and in many ways I wanted to do much more than watch this movie, it never kept my interest fully. Let us know your thoughts of the Film and leave your comments below.

The Binge Watcher Review: Hard Target 2 (2016)

Synopsis:

Retired mixed martial artist Wes “The Jailor” Baylor can’t refuse a million dollar purse he’s offered for one final bout in Myanmar. But when he arrives for the fight, he learns he’s been tricked into becoming the target of a human hunt. Carrying only water and a ruby-filled money belt ruby-filled money belt for the last person standing.

The Good:

An action packed movie filled with great fighting sequences. The movie itself had a decent plot and the acting was ok.

The Bad:

This movie is just another in a wide range of movies where people are taken to a remote place and hunted for sport. The one movie that stands out in comparison is The Condemned Starring Stone Cold Steve Austin. In Comparison this movie just doesn’t have the star power to get excited about.

Final Thoughts:

Scott Adkins does a good job portraying a man lost after the he was responsible for the death of a friend during and MMA bout, but it seems to be a meaningless plot point for the entire story until the end. It never seems to drive him even though the movie touches on it multiple times throughout the film.

Even with some of the odd storylines through out the movie, I must say there was a lot to like about Hard Target 2. Its defiantly falls into he “Movie for Guys that like Movies” and is a great Saturday afternoon movie. Let us know what your thoughts of the movie were and leave your comments below.

The Binge Watcher Review: Interrogation (2016)

Interrogation (2016)

Synopsis:

After the FBI receives a threat that endangers the entire city, an Interrogator and an I.T. Specialist are plunged into a series of mind games with a criminal mastermind, desperately racing against time to uncover the villain’s true agenda as they fight to protect thousands of lives. 

The Good:

This may be the best WWE Studio’s film that has been made couple that with Adam Copeland’s ever improving performance and you end up with a solid movie.

The Bad:

While the movie itself and the star of the movie were solid, the supporting cast left a lot to be desired. I am not saying it was horrible but it definitely felt like a movie which had the cast of a Straight to DVD Movie.

Final Thoughts:

Interrogation is the third film in the WWE/Lionsgate movie agreement which was agreed upon to showcase emerging talent. If you haven’t figure out yet, this really is to showcase WWE Talent. Interrogation is not the exception, as this movie stars former WWE star and Hall of Famer Edge (Adam Copeland) and current WWE Star Lana (CJ Perry). Usually you would have to be a Hard Core WWE fan to enjoy the movie, but this film is different, Its actually a solid movie

Adam Copeland performance is a major improvement since his first major movie “Bending The Rules”. It’s one of the reason’s this movie came across as much more watchable than most WWE Films.

This movie starts with the interrogation of man who is terrorizing a community and ends with a major twist which you wouldn’t see coming. With a film like this it was nice to see that the action used was spaced between the plot of the movie, leaving the viewer with a nice fast pace film that doesn’t leave you bored and wanting to turn the channel. I recommend this film for your viewing pleasure.

The Binge Watcher Review: Swiss Army Man (2016)

Synopsis:

A hopeless man stranded on a deserted island befriends a dead body and together they go on a surreal journey to get home

The Good:

The performance by both Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe were beyond great. You are able to feel the anguish of Dano’s character, and the performance by Radcliffe of a dead man trying to relearn everything with a childlike touch was brilliant. The writing was equally as brilliant.

The Bad:

This would definitely fall into the artsy film category, if that isn’t your cup of tea this movie might be long. 

Final Thoughts:

Not many movies can fit in as many fart and masturbation jokes as Swiss Army Man did and still come pull off with a quality story. The movie itself has a dream like feel with a touch of peter pan. A man with no friends finally finds one in a dead body and the adventure to get home takes off. Its the quest home that we learn the true ability of Radcliffe’s Manny and where we get the name of the movie.

The movie itself is impressive and can be consider excellent, however its never as endearing as it wants to be. It sometimes seems to push to hard to gain the viewers acceptance. In many ways in the end the movie is just that a Dream Like experience, its the wooden boy who never becomes real.

Synopsis: 

Two New York detectives work under cover in Paris to Catch a Thief who’s threatening to flood the fashion market with bootlegged handbags.

The Good:

Let’s start with the obvious and that is Luis Guzman, personally find him hilarious in any comedy which he is in. This movie is no different, however Edgar Garcia steels the show. Garcia is great at being the calming influence opposite of Guzman’s over the top Player.

The Bad: 

The film itself never plays to the strengths of Luis Guzman, instead relying heavily on a script that never reaches the next level. 

Final Thoughts:

Although there are funny moments in this movie, it never moves past “Straight To DVD” quality. Most of the issues are with creditability, Outside of Garcia’s character being the lovable family man, there really isn’t much as to believe in this film,. These two are not so great detectives and Luis Guzman is more a horny old man than Player, and seriously does anyone really believe he can land a woman like Rosario Dawson? 

The Movie itself is good but not great, I wouldn’t recommend you run our to buy ever. But if you have run out of Netflix options and need a movie for a long weekend than this is it. So if your ok with watching a Horny old Puerto Rican hit on women from Paris than this is the movie for you.

The Binge Watcher Review: Gridlock (2015)

Synopsis:

The Good:

Action packed movie which falls into the category of “Movies for guys who love Movies” Dominic Purcell proves that he can hold his own as the star of an action movie.

The Bad: 

Not much dialogue to go with the movie, it definitely is a straight to DVD movie, and a Saturday movie at home. 

Final Thoughts:

This film is straight action, there are no other ways to describe it. If you’re fans of Prison Break, The Flash or Legends of Tomorrow, you will love seeing Dominic Purcell’s in this movie……Straight Bad Ass. What makes an action movie though is the villain, Solid action movies need an actor that can make you believe in the evil of the character, Stephen Lang definitely fills those shoes. And for those die hard Wrestling fans Gridlock also stars WWE Hall of Famer Trish Stratus.

The Binge Watcher Review: Air (2015)

Air (2015)

Synopsis:

In the near future, breathable air is Nonexistent and two engineers tasked with guarding the last hope for mankind struggle to preserve their own lives while administering to their vital task at hand. 

The Good:

If you love anything that Norman Reedus has done than this movie is for you.

The Bad:

For the most part everything about this movie was bad. This is one of those movies which was better in theory and not when executed. The idea of two men being isolated from human contact outside of each other just missed the mark. 

Final Thoughts:

With the rising star of Norman Reedus and the inclusion of Djimon Hounsou seemed like an instant hit, but like many low budget movies the downfall was in the writing. In many ways this should have been an action packed movie, but it just took to long to develop. By the time the film actually became interesting I was already bored and wanting to move on to something different. 

This was a perfect example of a movie that was relying on psychology and two stars to carry it, in the end it was nothing more than a B movie at best not worth a spot in your Saturday morning lineup.

The Binge Watcher Review: The Ridiculous Six (Netflix Original)

The Ridiculous Six

Synopsis:
White Knife, an orphan raised by Native Americans, discovers that five outlaws are actually his half-brothers. Together, they set out to save their wayward father

The Good:

Wow it only took Netflix to create a Adam Sandler movie which was actually worth watching. Was this great? No, but it wasn’t the Cobbler or Blended either. If I had to compare this movie to any of the previous Sandler flix I would have to lean towards Mr. Deeds. 

The Bad:

Depending on what type of movie watcher you currently are, this movie may not be for you. Its not suppose to be western, it feels like a Happy Maddison Production. It’s definitely a movie that doesn’t take itself seriously and you shouldn’t either.

Final Thoughts:

Adam Sandler has said in multiple interviews he was trying to make a western similar to  Blazing Saddles, I am sad to say he did not accomplish that. This movie really doest even reach the likes of a Million Ways To Die in The West. Its a good thing this was a Netflix Original because Ridiculous 6 just reminds me of the John Candy comedy Wagons East, A Walmart $3 bin Movie.

Depending on what side of the fence you are on, you either loved the cameo’s from the usual friends of Sandler’s or you ended up hating the movie because of them. I personally loved the appearances of Terry Crews, Jorge Garcia, and Vanilla Ice.

This wasn’t the best film but it was good. It’s definitely worth a watch since it’s on Netflix. It was nice to see Sandler kind of redeem himself from some of his previous movies. I give this One Thumbs Up.

The Binge Watcher Review: A Very Murray Christmas

A Very Murray Christmas

The Good:
Well to start with this Netflix Special stars Bill Murray. This automatically should require everyone to instantly watch, especially if you like classic Murray. The additions of both Clooney and Cyrus where great….I know I am just as surprised I am giving Miley Cyrus praise. 

The Bad: 
Unfortunately this Netflix Special was lacking in pop, It definitely was missing something to put it over the top. Maybe it was the writing or maybe just the wrong cameo’s. George Clooney was excellent but Chris Rock was just ok, I am also just over the casting of Michael Cera in just about anything. 

Finally Thoughts:
This was a good special, I wouldn’t say great but it was good. Since its just a special and it is Christmas time its worth the watch. Now I acknowledge that I myself will always have a special place in my heart for anything Murray does. Most of the classics I still watch he starred in. If the show just consisted of just Clooney, Cyrus, Jenny Lewis, and Murray singing with Paul Shaffer on piano it may have been great. Unfortunately the additions of the rest of the cast really dumbed down the special. Highlight of the Show had to be the duet of Murray and Lewis singing “Baby It’s Cold Outside”

The Binge Watcher Review: Elementary

Elementary

Staring: Johnny Lee Miller & Lucy Liu

Synopsis:

This is a modern day take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Classic character Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock leaves present-day London for Manhattan after a stint in rehab. Once in New York, Sherlock takes back up with consulting for the police with his new sober companion Dr. Joan Watson.

The Good:

If you are at all a fan of Sherlock Holmes you will enjoy this adaptation. Its an interesting take having Holmes in New York, this has opened the show up to so many new possibilities with out having the need to tie to the original stories. Each week there is a new mystery which needs solving while the show still runs with an over all story line. Also many may dislike the change from Dr. John Watson into a Female; however the switch has worked and much of that is to the credit of Lucy Liu. The chemistry between Sherlock and Joan from protégée into partner through the three season is what keeps the show interesting. 

The Bad:

The liberties the creators took with he characters can be frustrating, as much as I have enjoyed the switch from John to Joan its still hard to wrap once head around. The change which I dislike the most is with James moriarty being made into Jamie Moriarty. This frustration is more evident due the writers making Moriarty as Ilene Adler. After watching the show through the first three season I understand the change however the creators missed out on a chance to have two great character instead of just one. I am also a little disappointed that we don’t get 221B Baker Street, the famous home of Sherlock Holmes. Instead we only get the occasional reference and one episode which they visited London.

Finally Thoughts:

Johnny Lee Miller is awesome as Sherlock Holmes, he has made this character so much better to enjoy. Is he Benedict Cumberbatch….No But we shouldn’t compare to BBC version, it is still better. However if you need a Sherlock Fix, Elementary is a great choice. Like many shows today, the soundtrack absolutly enhances the show especially with the music selected for the last scene every episode.

Give Elementary a Try, its currently on Hulu and its definitely worth some binge watching time.

The Binge Watcher Review: Hawaii 5-0

Synopsis:
The series covers the actions of a small special state task force in Hawaii, headed by Lt. Commander Steve McGarrett, USNR as it investigates crimes ranging from terrorism to kidnapping. McGarrett chooses as his partner Honolulu P.D. Detective Danny "Danno" Williams. He fills out the team by selecting Chin Ho Kelly, his father's protégé, and Chin's cousin, Kono Kalakaua, a rookie H.P.D. cop. They are assisted by Dr. Max Bergman, a medical examiner for the State of Hawaii, and Jerry Ortega, Chin's high school classmate and conspiracy theorist. Steve later adds Lou Grover, a former H.P.D. SWAT commander, to the Five-0 team.

Review:
The last episode of a season is a Binge watchers worse nightmare, at first you panic and than after the initial shock wares off the real work begins. The search for a new show. You pull up Hulu and netfilx and you begin the difficult journey of trying to find that perfect new show to watch. Like most people, this has happened to myself multiple times. Every time i began the search there were always those show I past over, I laughed to myself and thought “there is no way I will ever watch that show”. For me that was Hawaii 5-0, there was no way I would watch a remake to what I consider a cheesy 80’s show. Than the inevitable happened, I ran out of interesting content. Best thing to happen.

Hawaii 5-0 who are currently on their 6th season, follow an elite task force while they protect the Islands of Hawaii. Through the first 4 season the main team consist of Steve McGarrett, Danny Williams, Chin Ho Kelly, and Kona Kalakaua, while the 5th and 6th seasons added Lou Grover. Now each episode obviously has some sort of threat or attack; however unlike most television shows Hawaii 5-0 has had a series storyline instead of an individual season story. The other aspect of the show which i have really enjoyed is the lack of drama between the main characters, most other shows try to create drama by causing some divide. This show is all about family for the main cast, they always seem to have each others back no matter what, it also pays respect to veterans of the US Arm Forces with a lot of stories which tie in the attacks at pearl harbor. Finally the show has some of the best supporting characters you can ask for.

Final thoughts, Hawaii 5-0 is great show. I love watching it on Netflix and I am glad I gave the show a chance. I have recommended this show to many people and if you haven’t yet make sure to check it out.
